GTM 12 and GTM 20 Traffic Receivers

The GTM 20 is an FM-band receiver that works with compatible Garmin GPS units to display traffic events and enable rerouting. The FM TMC traffic information is received through radio signals transmitted by independent service providers.

The Traffic Message Channel (TMC) is a specific application of FM Radio Data used for broadcasting real-time traffic and weather information. TMC traffic alerting works on a “silent” FM sideband signal – which means that drivers can still listen to music or news programming on their car radios, without interference from the incoming FM traffic data transmissions.

Subscription Information

Traffic services are available only in select cities where coverage exists. A subscription may be required to enable traffic capability.

Throughout most of Western Europe, basic TMC data is a free public service, accessible through a number of providers. In France and the UK, premium service requires a subscription. In the U.S., a subscription to the Total Traffic Network is required.
