FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (December 9, 2011)
West Marine Fort Lauderdale Boating Superstore, the largest boating store in the United States, celebrated its grand opening by hosting “Cruising for a Cause,” a unique opportunity that allowed local marine charities to raise funds for their programs. The event raised $27,800 for the 13 non-profits involved.

“We have received a tremendous outpouring support from the community for our new flagship store and we sure appreciate it!” said Geoff Eisenberg, CEO of West Marine. “In keeping with the company’s mission of conserving marine habitats and supporting local marine non-profits, we knew that hosting Cruising for a Cause during our grand opening was a great way to give back to the community.”

West Marine’s “Cruising for a Cause” donated 100 percent of the proceeds from tickets sold and auction bids to the participating charities. Each non-profit organization had tables set up throughout the 50,000 square foot store with information and activities about their programs. Throughout the evening, guests were invited to stop by each display and learn about the organizations.

Other highlights of the evening included a meet and greet with Edgar Hansen and Jake Anderson from the hit show “Deadliest Catch,” live music provided by Jimmy Stowe and the Stowaways, and a silent and live auction.

West Marine also held a ribbon cutting ceremony with Eisenberg, West Marine Founder Randy Repass, West Marine Fort Lauderdale General Manager Demi Warner, City of Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler, City Manager Lee Feldman, City Commissioners Charlotte Rodstrom and Romney Rogers, and other West Marine team members.

Benefiting charities included: BoatU.S. Foundation, NOVA Southeastern University Oceanographic Center, Guy Harvey Foundation, Shake-A-Leg Miami, Veterans Ocean Adventures, Freedom Waters Foundation, Miami Dolphin Foundation, Hook the Future, Snook & Gamefish Foundation, Hillsboro Inlet Sailing Club, Cry of the Water, The International SeaKeepers Society, and Marine Industry Cares.
