West Marine, the world’s largest waterlife retailer, announced the grand opening celebration for its new, larger store in Braintree, MA. The Grand Opening festivities kick off on Thursday, June 26 at 8 a.m. and goes through Sunday, June 29. In-store events will include tips from experts, electronics demos, door-buster deals, giveaways and raffles. The new Braintree store is located at 140 Ivory Street, in Ivory Plaza Shopping Center.
With more than 18,000 square feet of space, the West Marine store at this new and larger location will serve the needs of everyone who loves spending time on or around the water. The 1,400 square foot Fishing and Bait Shack contains both inshore and offshore fishing and tackle gear specifically selected for the area. Enhanced specialty departments include a larger engine parts department, a wider selection of apparel, footwear and accessories, plus an assortment of inflatable boats, kayaks and a variety of stand-up paddleboards (SUPs).
The West Marine Braintree crew includes 30 associates who have a wide variety of boating, fishing and kayaking experiences in the waters of Boston Harbor and other parts of the New England coastline. Store manager David Young grew up nearby in Cohasset, MA, boating most weekends on a 35-foot wooden cabin cruiser, which was built in 1930 and bought by his grandfather in 1959. He also grew up waterskiing off a 21-foot powerboat. Today, he’s on the boat most weekends with his family, including wife Natalie, daughter, Maggie who is 10, and a son, Joshua, 8. “I have fond memories on Martha’s Vineyard, cruising around, going to the beach and having cookouts on our Magma grill,” Young says. “It’s great to be able to share that experience with my family.” Young has been with West Marine for 18 years.
Other West Marine Braintree team members include Bill Edward, a 10-year West Marine veteran who brings fishing expertise, particularly with striped bass. Jerry Ready, who has been with West Marine for a decade, is an accomplished sailor who has done off-shore and buoy races as well as cruising. Cormac McLoughlin has been brought on board as the new store’s Stand Up Paddleboard expert. “Many of our associates have a mix of boating experience – sailing, power boating and paddling,” says Young. “They are a terrific resource for customers, whether they are new to boating or very experienced.”
The new store is the largest in the South Boston area and will include an expanded assortment across the store. “What I am really excited about is having everything for the boater, all the core products and then all the waterlife products,” says Young. “The clothing section is terrific, and we’ll have everything you need to keep your engine running. Sailboat hardware is three to four times as large as we had before. I can’t wait to show it to our customers.”
The Grand Opening weekend coincides with the popular Braintree 4th of July Parade, which West Marine is a sponsor of this year.
