Makarka is a commercial fisherman who catches salmon out of the Bristol Bay area and halibut in the Bering Sea. From his 16-foot boat, he hunts bears, moose, and ducks in the ocean and on rivers. He is also an avid snowboarder and surfer. "I would like to take this opportunity to thank West Marine and Sperry Top-Sider for this great prize! Last year I had my first ever experience paddle boarding in Hawaii, and I fell in love with the experience and have been thinking about getting a board for the lakes and some of the surfs here in Alaska," says Makarka. "Our summers are short, and we live every day of them by playing outside on our lakes, creeks, rivers, and seas for all of our water sports."
Five other lucky winners won Sperry Top-Sider footwear through the contest, which received approximately 8,000 entries and ran May 1-31, 2014. Entry forms were available at West Marine stores and online at westmarine.com/sweepstakes.
