Marine Paint Remover

An environmentally safer alternative to caustic or methylene chloride paint removers, West Marine marine paint remover is formulated to remove up to five layers of marine antifouling, topside paints and varnishes in one application. The process is simplified by its blue color which turns white or light blue when paint is ready to be removed. Biodegradable, non-flammable, odor-free and it easily cleans up with water. As a paste, it clings to vertical surfaces and can be applied by brush, spray or roller.

We used this product on our Aphrodite 101 sloop to remove Micron bottom paint which had been building up for over ten years. The bottom paint was in good condition and the race boat bottom was brushed clean once or twice a week during the season. The build up was significant but not severe.

We tried a couple of other similar "green" brands from big box stores prior to using the West product. The West product was easier to use, worked better, and has a lower total cost of use. The color change is a major advantage. My most common mistake was to not apply enough material when rolling it onto the bottom. The color of the "thin" areas was different from the color of the thick sections so I would apply a second layer and that would do it. Generally, two applications were needed before sanding the bottom clean.

On the interior, our deck is lined with a fuzzy material we call mouse fur. I am removing that now with the West product. It works fairly well. One application removes most of the fur. The second application removes the adhesive.

A consideration with rolling is that the paint remover also removes the roller cover adhesive. Typical latex paint roller covers only lasted about an hour, which I was OK with.

This is not my first use of paint remover for bottom paint. I have used the really toxic stuff and the peel-away stuff. It is always a hard job. The West product is effective and not too messy. Patience is required. I checked with a soda blaster who said I should use remover as he would be way too expensive (partly due to travel to Cape Cod).

Could not use the product. The product is very thick and spray bottle will not dispense it. I will be returning this. I can't tell if actual product is effective or not.

          Comments about Marine Paint Remover:

Did not work that well; only had three coats of ablative bottom paint. It did not soften the paint all that well, and took a lot of effort to scrape the paint off. Not impressed based on it's descriptive abilities.

              Comments about Marine Paint Remover:

Used to strip many years of anti-foulig paint from a Macgregor 19.Brushed on 1 quart at 10:30 in the morning,by about 1:00 that afternoon the color had changed, proceeded to peel off the paint with a sharp putty knife (1 inch wide). The quart covered about 1/4 of the bottom so I ordered another gallon to finish the job. No strong odour, does'nt burn if you get a little on you and soap and water clean up. Great stuff!

              Comments about Marine Paint Remover:

My GELCOAT is now permanently damaged from this product. It dissolved the top layer of GELCOAT in many places and didn't touch the paint in other places. I have used this before on gelcoat. It isn't the most effective product at easily removing paint. This time is destroyed my gel coat.

                  Comments about Marine Paint Remover:

Used it to remove a new and old layer of bottom paint next to freshly painted out drives just before launch. Required repeated applications and elbow grease but didn't harm the freshly painted outdrives that were taped off. Doesn't appear to be as caustic when accidentally coming in contact with skin and thus user friendly.
