Electric trolling motors provide quiet, zero-emission propulsion to precisely maneuver small boats while fishing. Trolling motors consist of a power head, shaft and a watertight propeller hub.
Bow-mount trolling motors are mainly used on bass boats. They are often equipped with mechanical or electrical pedals that allow hands-free operation so the operator/angler can focus on fishing. Many of the more recent models can be operated with a cordless remote control which can be worn on the angler’s wrist or belt. Cordless remote controls enable operation of the trolling motor from anywhere on the boat. They increase safety by eliminating cords or wires that can be tripped over.
How the Bow-Mount Works
The mount for a bow-mount trolling motor looks like a hinged set of jaws, which are nearly closed when the motor is deployed. When it is stowed on deck, the hinged top portion folds backward 180° until it lies flat on the deck, bringing the motor along with it.
Fresh- versus Saltwater Use
If you plan on using your trolling motor in saltwater, be sure to select a model designed for saltwater use. Saltwater trolling motors are protected against corrosion and have better seals on the mechanical and electrical components.
