Aqua Strip Paint Stripper

Formulated to remove up to 10 thick layers of marine antifouling paint, Aqua Strip is a heavy-duty yet environmentally safer alternative to caustic and methylene chloride strippers and other noxious compounds. It stays wet for extended periods of time to penetrate and lift multiple layers of paint—making it possible to strip large areas at one time. Effective for removing most types of marine paint, including antifouling paints, varnishes, polyurethanes, urethanes and enamels. It’s odor-free and easily cleans up with water. As a paste it clings to vertical surfaces and can be applied by brush, spray or roller.

Pretty thick, stir some to ease application. I used putty knife to slice some gel from the 1 gal can and cheap brush to smear on. Since I worked spring/ summer on Gulf Coast, I had to be aware of temperature above 80 degrees. Either evening or morning. Never saw the color change (beige in the can and the color of paint on the hull) I guessed/experimented to get about 2 hours at 80 degrees. Lifted Petit Vivid over Trinidad, over some blue stuff, then a bit of grey barrier coat. Depends on how one defines layer, but I imagine it was 5ish layers. Barrier coat stays if you watch it. Instructions are accurate, but until you apply it the tricks are not obvious. After scraping with putty knife, be sure to have a stiff brush in a bucket of water. Use damp brush or scotch brite to prevent re-hardening of leftovers. This leaves nice smooth finish. Work in small batches or have partner come after with brush. This is a very important step.

Does not work exactly as advertised, but still pretty effective. Do not leave on until dry. Monitor and test scrape with putty knife. If about to dry out, brush water on outer layer and scrape. Two coats might be needed. Just remember that removing bottom paint is a crummy job. This stuff makes it a bit less crummy.

I bought this at west marine and got it home to find a big solid block of gel that was so hard I couldn't get it out of the container, I took it back to the store because the instructions say it's easy to brush or spray on so clearly this one was defective. We went to their stock and of the 4 containers in stock 3 were also bad and only was was still good because it had just been delivered. I have used other brands with no problems and used this brand once to remove some topside paint and even though this product says it will not harm gelcoat in multiple places it does! I used this product only once and the first time I used it it ate right through my gelcoat and ruined it in multiple places! I called the manufacturer and they argued with me saying that I was lying to them because what happened to my boat they said was impossible, yet I have the pictures to prove it and they said we can't help you. Now I'm left with a couple holes in my gelcoat from the damage, luckily west marine customer service was actually helpful and made it right but do not buy this if you value your boat.

Comments about Aqua Strip Paint Stripper:

Worked as promised, need to make sure to get all paint off when it is wet and gooey, it will harden back into paint. The topside paint instantly started to crinkle, the bottom paint got gooey as advertised. My only mistake was not to save some for final clean-up. I had thick ablative bottom paint, and now have pretty clean fiberglass, with some blue splotches. If I had saved a little of the remover for final touch-up it would have been a perfect job. I was a little afraid because the air temperature was at the low end of the scale according to the directions, but it worked very well.

Aqua Strip works as advertized to strip VC-17

Comments about Aqua Strip Paint Stripper:

Needed to apply with a plastic puddy knife because it has a gelatinous consistency which was too thick to brush. Worked well to cover with Saran wrap or other plastic so it doesn't dry out while cutting the paint. In cooler temps (the 40s F) it needs an hour to completely cut the VC-17.
