Comments about Marelon Ball Valves & Tailpieces:

Valve & various available tailpieces made on Marelon, which I've heard is fiberglass reinforced nylon. Valve works smoothly, does not leak when "off". Male threads of tailpieces and female in valve body not tapered & leak unless sealant used. Neither thread tape nor pipe joint compound worked for me. Had to use caulk on last 1/4 inch of male threads to be screwed in. May have trouble getting pieces apart if needed. 1-1.2" hose-barb tailpieces easily slip into 1-1/2" ID Trident Premium Sanitation hose; but hose clamps sealed connection w/no leak; leak only from threads.

        • Through Hull Fittings

Comments about Marelon Ball Valves & Tailpieces:

I've used Marelon products for through hull fittings for years. Great Products BUT quality control seems to be slipping with Forespar. I installed two of these and a straight and right angle tail piece. Added sikoflex bedding compound making sure it was well into the threads, screwed in the tail pieces. All went together smoothly, the hull fittings screwed in 6 turns (recommended OK) and was firm. The tails screwed in 7 turns and were firm. Waited 48 hrs for the bedding to cure. Launched - and was horrified to see THREE leaks - one from each tail piece and one from a through hull. Two were slight drips, one was a stream! I could not believe it. Had to re-haul instantly, took it all apart (that wasn't easy, it was really bedded well). Reassembed this time using West Silicone bedding. Then after 24hrs water tested by putting a bung in the through-hulls and filling the pipes with water. No leaks. Lesson learned, Water test a new through-hull/ballvalve Before launch - it would have saved us $600. Why did it leak? Close inspection of the fittings that leaked showed two ridges in the bottom of the threads left over from the molding process. I believe these should have been cleaned up after the molding process to assure clean, smooth threads. Somehow the ridges allowed a pathway for the water to penetrate. The silicone bedding covered it better.

More compact than other valves and very light. Aside from the marine world non - NPT, it would be a great valve for use in hard environments.
