Comments about GPSMAP 740s Chartplotter / Sounder with GMR 18HD Radome with No Transducer:

Depth recorder: When installed correctly w/bronze thru-hull transducer, reads to 900 ft at 40 MPH!
Chart plotter: Reads the satellites perfectly through the hardtop w/o external antenna, flush mounted in dash.
Radar: MUCH better return images than previously installed radar

      Garmin's technical assistance is outstanding!

Comments about GPSMAP 740s Chartplotter / Sounder with GMR 18HD Radome with No Transducer:

We bought the 740s with radome package. Setup was straightforward. Screens are very intuitive. Have used it now for several weeks along the ICW. Love the ability to zoom/pan ahead, click to tide & current information, etc. Also, ran aground a few times and just hit "mark" to record exact location for future reference.

Comments about GPSMAP 740s Chartplotter / Sounder with GMR 18HD Radome with No Transducer:

I would Love to have a new product with this combo - charting plus radar in a compact case.

Downside (and buried deep in the pdf install manual) is the Compass Safe Distance of a minimum of 32 inches. That's over Two and a Half Feet.
That can be done on the wide dash board console on many power boats, but not at all for binnacle guard mounting on a sailboat. And that's the norm for sailboats built since wheel steering became common in the late 70's.

Garmin changed to a powerful permanent magnet to hold their chip door closed, several years ago. As professional marine electronics retailers say, "What the H___ were they thinking!"

Some WM staff are indeed up front about this, many are not, and a few try to deny it.

When not in use or when (and regardless of brand they all can cease) it stops working, you MUST remove it from a mounting position near you old reliable ship's compass and store it elsewhere. And if you store it in a drawer, make darned sure it's nowhere near your AP compass either. (!)

I just unpacked my brand new unit and discovered two things that are not clear in any of the advertising. First you really need the Garmin PC software HomePort - It's not expensive, only $30 and I can't understand why Garmin didn't just include it with this [$] instrument. But worse I am a LONG way from the states and now have to order HomePort which could have been added to the shipment to start with. The second thing you won't know until you unpack the unit is that there are TWO wires to the radar - one for power the other for the radar data. Why Garmin did not put them together in one wire, like Raymarine, is beyond me. They also say not to route the data wire parallel and close to power cables. Pretty difficult to do when the Radome is 10 metres up the mast and both cables are 10 metres long and need to get to the adjacent sockets.

Comments about GPSMAP 740s Chartplotter / Sounder with GMR 18HD Radome with No Transducer:

The 740s gives me radar, GPS and sonar without needing a complicated network. The connections and setup were easy. Drilling through the mast and routing through the bilge was tight, but straightforward. Picture quality is excellent. Only wished that the radar cables could be supplied in two sections, disconnected at the mast base for easy take down. With single cable segments from radar to unit, there are 3 separate lines that have to be removed throughout the boat, should I need to take the mast off the boat.

Comments about GPSMAP 740s Chartplotter / Sounder with GMR 18HD Radome with No Transducer:

This is a great unit for the price. However, if you look on the screen shot you will see that the "mark" key is next to the menu key. This is bothersome, while under way ( rough seas) and attempting to hit menu the unit will mark useless waypoints all over the place which is extremely annoying to me. The key should be located in an area that doesn't otherwise get touched. The way points can be individually deleted but if your running in rough water and need your hands you might end up marking 4 useless waypoints every time you go for the menu key, which you have to hit every time you change function. You can individually delete them but that could take forever, so with this unit you could be asking "is this my live bottom I've marked or some other number or is it one of those useless waypoints from the mark key being hit against your will over and over again?" This complaint really applies to offshore fishing in the carolinas. But overall, this unit is great for the price and all the other functions are above average in quality.

Replaced an older Fruno chartplotter with this model. It is much easier to learn and use. I did have assistance installing the new transducer (optional) but installation of the Garmin was easy by following the instructions. It only took about 4 hours to install. I also added the optional GPS antenna. With the optional 3-D chip the GPS Screen provides a satellite view and even have a Radar overlay which is very helpful.
