Sound quality and volume:
This little system packs great sound and runs great with all the phones/tablets in my home. We're a gadget familty, so we use various Android devices, including the HTC MyTouch 4G, Amaze 4G, Samsung Galaxy 3, Asus Transformer Prime, a couple of generic 7" tablets), all them with the PlayerPro music app, along with a couple laptops and iPods. This speaker has way better sound than any phone or tablet, and even better volume and quality than the JBL speakers on our Lenovo and the Altec Lansing speakers on our Asus laptops. I can't believe how much bass I get while holding this thing. The first few days I had it, a new song from our library would come on that sounded especially good and I'd run over to my wife to show how loud and clear it was.

Control Buttons:
As for the controls, I know the Rockout 2 is made to be iPhone compatible, since the Android OS allows apps to override the control scheme for headsets and microphones, compatibility with Android is more app dependent than phone dependent. The volume buttons work with any setup, even my laptop. The play/pause, back, and forward buttons work with all our phones and tablets...I know PlayerPro can override all other headset controls and customize them. The default settings on that app work great with this speaker. Even without the player control buttons working (like on a laptop), I just use the player itself and it's still worth having on hand.

Uses:
So far, we've taken the Rockout 2 camping and hiking, protecting my phone inside the housing and using the little clip and bungee system on the back to hang it from a tree, my frame pack, the tent, and even strapped like a little backpack to our little girl as she played on the trail (great for keeping track of her without keeping too close an eye). I strap it to my arm while doing chores and hang it from the back door handle while gardening. Earphones hurt after awhile and headphones isolate me from people around me, like my family, so this is great when I need more sound than the built-in speakers on my portable devices (which is pretty much always). All around, this is a fantastic accessory to mobile media centers.

Charging:
I use this at fairly high volumes for hours a day and typically charge about once a week. I don't know the exact run times, but so far I've never gotten to the point where I "needed" to charge and just plugg it into my phone's USB charger (sweet!) whenever I remember to and it has worked for me. That's a fresh experience compared to all my other electronics where the first thing I have to do when I get to work or back home is plug it in. On our camping trip, we had the Rockout playing music and as the audio for a movie on our tablet for most of one night, then plugged it into a Nomad 7 the next morning and had it playing all day and into the next night without ever getting to the end of its charge.

One last thing about this speaker is that it looks and feels very robust and very cool. I'm pretty careful with my electronics, but some people in my family aren't. Not only did it make it through a lot of abuse with a bunch of kids in the wilderness while camping, it protected my phone inside a pretty rugged housing. I don't care as much about looks either, but if my wife appreciates the looks of an electronic gadget enough to comment on it, you know it looks good. Now I just want to get another one so I can chain them together for double the sound...

Problems with the controls??

By csuthers

Comments about Goal Zero Rock Out 2 Portable Speakers:

The sound, portability, and protection of the device are great. Sometimes however, the music will pause on its own, or the volume will turn all the way up and down spontaneously. It only happens when my device is plugged into the Rock Out, so I don't believe it's a problem with my device.

Groovy, green and rugged!

Comments about Goal Zero Rock Out 2 Portable Speakers:

I bought these as a gift for someone, mostly for them partly because I knew I'd love them too!! They came in, the packaging was on point. I must say goal zero is marketing solar gadgets in such a cool and hip way. So the box was fun, cudos. The solar speakers were easy to figure out, loved the hookups and easy storage of cords and phone inside the speakers to protect the phone while you are outdoors listening to tunes powered by the sun. I have laced them onto just about everything and I just love them. I want more. The sound quality is great, and projects fairly well for it's size.

Unit is not quipped with Bluetooth

By SSummers

Comments about Goal Zero Rock Out 2 Portable Speakers:

Purchased this product with out reading the specifications, as I have many Gaolzero Products and am completely impressed with them. Much to my surprise, the Rock Out 2 Portable Speaker is not equipped with Bluetooth. For the price of this speaker (compared to the Rock Out Speakers I already own) it should be equipped with Bluetooth. Having control buttons on the speaker itself does little for me, especially with the six inch cord and my smart phone so close by (kind of pointless if you ask me) for control purposes. Thanks for all the great stuff, but no thanks for the Rock Out 2 Portable Speaker.

I bought these speakers for my bike and took them on a recent MS150 trek from Houston to Austin. Didn't have to charge them once, and they survived the rain!

Just one thing... the speaker cuts out.

By happyt3hman

Comments about Goal Zero Rock Out 2 Portable Speakers:

I would rate this five stars and recommend it to everyone if not for one thing: When I use it as a laptop speaker to watch videos (YouTube or BluRay) the speaker cuts out between dialog. Unless there is constant soundtrack or ambient noise the speaker seems to turn off until dialog resumes. It's annoying because I end up missing out on the first second or so of the movie dialog when the actors resume talking. This has never been a problem when it comes to music, however. Aside from that this is a great portable speaker. It lasts at least as long as advertised, it's definitely weather proof (I've left it out in the rain and snow) and the sound is impressive considering the size of the speakers. I work on really loud industrial sites in northern Canada and I use this all the time in all sorts of situations.

I recently bought this and will not be testing it as I have nothing to play it with. This is my gift for my son who recently returned from Afghanistan and is coming to Idaho to go camping with the family. This is his birthday gift!

Good, but needs some improvements

By Kingfishdude

Comments about Goal Zero Rock Out 2 Portable Speakers:

Had the original Rock Out for almost 2 years and liked it very much except for the lack of external controls. Now own the Rock Out 2 and find it much more convenient. However, and only focusing on the current design, I have two issues. The first is that the 3.5mm jack does not always make a good connection and this causes "feedback" when the unit is paused. This is not the end of the world, but in my opinion, a step down in quality. The second is that, currently the controls are at the bottom of the unit and they need to be at the top. Why? Well when operating the unit, lets say around my pool or hanging on the handlebars of my bicycle, you can't just use your finger to push the buttons, you need to either have if up against something firm or hard or you have to "pinch" it, otherwise you just end-up pushing the unit around. So I use mine upside down and "pinch" the unit to operate the controls with my thumb. Lastly, and this is just a suggestion, it would be nice if there were a Bluetooth option. While listening to music, sometimes I need to use my phone, and it's a bit of a pain to unzip the case, balance the unit on my leg/lap and send/receive texts and/or emails. It would also be nice to be able to use the external controls to pause the music (if necessary) and be able to receive/make calls. But overall, I like the Rock Out 2 product and the renewable power source concept of Goal Zero.

Exceptional!

By CathyAnn

Comments about Goal Zero Rock Out 2 Portable Speakers:

I am impressed with the quality of my speaker. I bought it because I couldn't stand using earbuds or headphones any longer. I can have it on low and watch/listen to a video on my laptop, or music from my tablet, a Samsung Galaxy Tab 4, and no one else in the room can hear it so they're not disturbed. I seldom turn the volume up, but when I do, I'm amazed at how good it sounds. So far, I've only used it while at my desk. However, in future, I will be taking it with me when traveling.
