Good product, inadequate documentation

Pros

  • Appears to be reliable

Cons

  • Inadequate wiring instructions

Best Uses

  • Bilge pump switch

Comments about Johnson Pump Electro-Magnetic Float Switch:

I bought this switch in conjunction with a new bilge pump to replace an existing pump and switch which had failed. My previous Rule switch had two wires, but this switch had three wires. The previous switch was wired to a master breaker and switch for "Off/ On: Auto". The installation instructions.for this switch did not address wiring for this configuration, and it required considerable experimentation to discover the only workable wiring configuration. A call to Johnson Pump support amounted to reading to me the exact same information that was in the 3"x9" installation instruction which came with the product. The support person had no more information available or other insight to offer further assistance. The good news is that the switch can be used with the off/on/auto switch and you just have to figure it out yourself.

Comments about Johnson Pump Electro-Magnetic Float Switch:

The small footprint was useful for me. It failed right after the 3 year warranty. Would have replaced with same model but local store doesn't carry it so had to get a mechanical one. Didn't want to leave the boat with no automatic bilge pump for 2 weeks.

      • Bildge

Comments about Johnson Pump Electro-Magnetic Float Switch:

My application was for a small "V" at the bottom of the hull. I had less than a 1 1/2" to work with. I removed the bottom mounting plate of the switch and inserted within a inch of the bottom. I used a hanging support to keep it positioned. This instalation successfully reduced 2" of water from the bilge. The switch performs flawlessly. Don't forget to put a filter on your pickup hose.

Replaced Mayfair brand with Johnson, who made original model. This one comes with a ground wire which Mayfair did not have. Must connect to metal part in order to run. Tests good.
