Mine works perfect. I had the FX-11 anchor made by Fortress and it would not drop so I switched to a 13lb anchor and now it works perfect. I have used it for 2 plus years without a single problem. With that said, I NEVER anchor using the windlass to hold my boat. I always cleat off the rope which is what the directions say to do. Installed on a 22' fishing boat and used in San Diego bay and kelp beds.

The case halves are not gasketed, they are just glued together with gobs of white caulking. Same with the power wires where they enter the bottom of the case. Just gobs of caulking inside the case to seal the holes that the power wires pass through.

This is not a design that can withstand the elements in my opinion. Mine has failed numerous times within the warranty period due to case leaks and gear failures. Even though I have been very gentle with it, it continues to disappoint.

I am now replacing it even though it is stll under warranty.

I can't trust it and to me that's a safety issue.

Comments about Pro Fish Free-Fall Windlasses:

We have previously run Lewmar windlass's for 7 years in fresh water and performance was flawless.
This one is brand new, raises the anchor, but locks up on free fall. Looks like i might have to buy another windlass. We can't trust this one

Comments about Pro Fish Free-Fall Windlasses:

The unit was new in 2007 and the motor just failed. To further other people's comments, I do not think it was sealed up correctly. The motor was totally corroded. Lewmar wouldn't warranty it, so I bought a new motor for $150 and installed it myself. I realize the unit was over seven years old before it failed, but coming from Lewmar, and at that price, I'd expect it to last a lot longer. It seems if the unit were better sealed, it would last longer.

I think this is a great product and the best windlass I have ever owned and I have owned several. My only complaint is the instructions were a bit confusing and I owned the pro fish for over a year before I learned how to properly use it. Other than that is is great in fresh and salt. Mine has been under water many hundreds of times as a result of waves but is still water tight after five years

Ok, maybe it wasn't designed as good as it could of been, however, mine works awesome after 4 years. With that being said, I ALWAYS cleat off the rope and never pull it up without getting the anchor out of the mud before hauling it in. Don't try pulling your anchor up without firs unsticking it or you might have problems. I use mine in San Diego Bay and it has several hundred cycles on it. Make sure to use the correct type of rope on it too. I'm VERY happy with mine. One more thing. Not sure on water intrusion, I cover my boat when its not being used.

I have a 26 1/2 ft., 2005 Glacier Bay. The boat came with a smaller Lewmar windless. After 7 years the original wore out. Replaced it with Pro-fish 700. After two + years it has worked fine with no problems. The only time it jammed was when the rode became twisted and the storage hold was almost full. I would buy another! It was a difficult install because the holes were different

Comments about Pro Fish Free-Fall Windlasses:

This windlass was on my 32' Bayliner when I bought it and it was rough, jammed up all the time, and the "free-fall" didn't seem to work well. It finally failed on me at the worst time. Not having time to deal with warranty, I disassembled it and found the compound gear was screwing itself apart. I ordered a new gear and checked every thing else to find that the wrong chain was being used. I replaced the 5/16" 3G chain with the correct 5/16" 4G chain and it now feeds smoothly. I have only used it a few times since, so I've yet to see how long it will last this time.

My first lasted leass than 2 years. It locked up. When my mechanic opened it up it was full of water. Warranty Replacement is now doing the same thing after less than two years. I always tie off on a cleat as recommended and drop anchor about 20 to 25 times a year during our Great Lakes season. We are getting less than 50 uses before self destruction. Poorly sealed, cheap internals.

Weak point is small thrust bearing in compound gear assembly. It failed and jammed gears. Wasn't used more than 50 times before this happened. Lewmar won't sell bearing by itself. Wants to sell whole compound gear assembly at over $100.00.

Now i'm just waiting for the gears to break and the motor to pile up.Only 20 uses. Very dissapointed.
