In the past two months I have run across two of these lock systems. The first was on an 8 HP Evinrude that was the kicker motor on a boat I purchased. The owner had lost the key to the lock, but I was able to remove it less than 5 minutes $25 bolt cutter available at any hardware store. The second was on the 15HP Johnson I purchased to replace the 8 HP Evinrude. The Johnson was locked on a wheeled outboard stand, and again, the owner had lost the key. This time, since I knew exactly where to cut, I removed the lock in one cut with virtually no effort and no damage to the bracket. My conclusion is that this lock would make the casual thief look elsewhere, but anyone with a bolt cutter could steal your motor in less than a minute! My recommendation is forget the lock, and bolt the motor to the transom with 4 long, fine threaded bolts and lock nuts. All but the most determined thief will not take the time to remove the bolts. - Dave

The bar was easily pried off and my outboard was stolen. After a month the lock was too corroded to unlock.

            Overall good theft protection
Still works but decided to replace mine after 25 years due to noticeable bar corrosion.

just cut mine off with a grinder after having been on the 25 HP engine for 1 year. Exposed to salt air continuously, and it corroded quickly. look for another option to lock your engine. a waste of money.

I went through 2 of these and both times I had to cut it open with a grinder because the lock was rusted so bad, could not even get the key in. It's by far the worst product I ever bought at West Marine

Absolutely not worth the investment of time and money. I had mine on my kicker for a couple of years, and it rusted to where I had to cut it off with a saw when it came time to remove my motor for service.

Comments about Master Lock Outboard Brass Bracket Lock:

I have all the same comments as the previous reviewers. I have had one of these on a Yamaha 9.9 for several years. I actually replaced it at one point since I couldn't find a viable alternative. My main gripe is that it rattles like crazy and nothing I've been able to do muffles it adequately. It's also true that the lock can easily fall out when being opened, and that by the end of a season it rusts up so as to be almost inoperable - inspite of constant oiling and even an attempt to seal the opening with silicon. I'm still looking for a good lock solution, but after reading the note about how easy it was to remove this I'm going to pass this time. It seems a shame that West Marine can't offer a better alternative for this - there are some out there.
