MERCURY MARINE
4hp & 6hp 4-Stroke Outboards

Mercury Marine’s 4-stroke technology consumes 40% less fuel than 2-stroke models for extraordinary value and savings

Engines surpass California Air Resources Board (CARB) 3-Star Rating, making them some of the cleanest running on the market-with 91% less emissions than traditional 2-stroke outboards!

The inherent 4-stroke characteristics of ultra-quiet, smoke-free operation, plus smooth idling and running make these engines a natural choice whether you’re trolling for fish or out just for fun. Clean running 4-stroke engines from 2.5 to 20hp have a CARB three-star, ultra-low emissions rating. The decompression system and electronic CD ignition design ensure an easy, reliable start. One-stage over-rev protection and low oil pressure warning system provide extra peace of mind. Exclusive multifunction tiller handle on the 8hp and 9.9hp models features shift, steering, throttle, throttle friction, and stop controls for convenient one-hand operation. Available in manual-tilt, gas-assist and power-trim. All models are sold with a propeller.

  • Engine Type: 4-stroke
  • Features: 4-stroke technology-quiet, clean running, 40% more fuel efficient than comparable 2-stroke engines, exceptional idling
  • Exhaust: Though prop
  • Start: Manual, with decompression system
  • Steering Type: Tiller
  • For U.S. shipment ONLY

4hp & 6hp 4-Stroke Outboards

  • A standard automatic cylinder decompression system greatly reduces starting pull force for effortless starting
  • The 4 hp model delivers ultimate portability with its integrated fuel tank and shut-off valve to prevent fuel spillage
  • A full forward-neutral-reverse side shift is standard
  • Gearing: F-N-R, 2.15:1
  • Trim Positions: 6, plus shallow-water drive
  • Tank Type: Integral fuel tank (gal / L)

Note: These Mercury outboards have 4-stroke engines and, like virtually all 4-stroke engines, depend on oil in their crankcases for lubrication. To prevent the oil from leaking during transport, the engines are not shipped with oil in their crankcases. You must put the correct amount and grade of oil in the crankcase prior to the first use or you will cause extensive damage to your engine, which is not covered by your engine’s warranty. Please read the owner’s manual for more information.

I bought this motor after returning a totally unreliable, but compact and light 3.5hp Mercury that would regularly quit and not restart. This 6hp Mercury is heavier than I wanted (20 lbs more than the smaller motor) but starts easily and runs reliably. It has additional nice features such as both internal and (extra cost) external tanks and reverse shift. I strongly suggest you seek out non ethanol fuel for any small outboard. They are approved for ethanol but that's not ideal. With the external tank it's easy enough to locate a gas station that has the good stuff.

My comments about the motor weight (57 lbs) has to do with its use on our RIB tender for our trawler and the need to hoist the tender and motor on davits. Also, I'm 75 and that's starting to show. The weight is probably not a factor for a lot of other users.

The motor starts easily, idles smoothly at very low RPM, unlike a two stroke. There is no need to mix oil with the gasoline. Throttle response is excellent at all power settings. However, since this outboard has only one cylinder there is much vibration during operation, especially low throttle settings. If it weren't for the vibration, this motor would be perfect and rate 5 stars.

      Comments about 4hp & 6hp 4-Stroke Outboards:

The 4Hp Mercury Outboard is a very nice looking motor and the flushing feature is extremely nice especially in a saltwater environment. When it is running it performs very well and is operates nicely on my sailboat. The problem is it is very very difficult to get the motor started when cold and very difficult on a re-start. None of the starting directions seem to work. The motor has less than 1 hour of operational time and has been to the shop to have the carburetor serviced which has made no difference.

        Comments about 4hp & 6hp 4-Stroke Outboards:

This motor is better in every way than the 12-year-old Honda 5hp 4-stroke it replaced. It's lighter, quieter and has less vibration. It's more than the 20% power increase I expected moving to 6hp. It's easier to start and shift. The only negative so far is that it cavitates when planing on my 10' Achilles, even though the fit is within the tolerance specified in the manual.

We put the 6 hp Mecury on an 11 ft inflatable. Nice power after the couple hour breaking in period. So far it has started on 1 or 2 pulls when cold. My first time buying an outboard and a boat, so we'll see how it treats a novice.
