This product replaces a previous model that was not polarity specific i.e. older product could be wired with either of the two balck wires connected to the + battery terminal. The new model has a red and black wire and must be wired red + black -. That's Ok but the wiring illustration describes only the the arrangement where the float switch is the only means by which the bilge pump is turned on whereas many applications are wired so that a manual bilge pump switch OR the float switch will turn on the pump. It would be helpful to include this additional wiring diagram in the instructions. This is particularly important now since they indicate that a reverse polarity will damage the unit.

Original from OEM burned-up, replaced with like kind so as not to have to drill new holes. Second one burned-up just like first. Replaced with a 3rd one thinking "no way same thing could happen again". Third one just like previous two - switch stuck open, burned-up contacts, melted float; and this time, killed battery beyond recovery. Now looking for a different float switch for emergency back-up.

Comments about Sure Bail E2 Float Switch:

I purchased this product to replace the same model in my center console boat. This product was not in use more than two months and found pump continuously running and switch smoking. I removed the switch and found that the back end of the lever that actuates the switch cracked open allowing water in the casing and shorting out the unit. It is disappointing that the unit failed after only a couple of months but even more disappointing that it is putting persons at risk.

Comments about Sure Bail E2 Float Switch:

Installs easily. Worked about 2 weeks. Came out and found bilge pump running continually, could not shut it off. Removed switch and tested circuit...closed. Went to West Marine for replacement and took my multitester. 2 new switches would not close manually. Got a different brand.

Replaced previous switch....lasted about 2 months. Replaced again (West Marine kind enough to replace under warranty)...lasted 3 weeks.
              Contacts fail internally.
              CHANGED BRANDS.

All other components in the biliage system servived, except for the wires on this switch; they were corroded and caused them to burn up and actually broke the wiring!

I bought and installed this unit in Sept, it worked fine for a while, went away for 3 weeks in late November, and came back to find my bilge full of water. It stuck in the "on" position and burned up my bilge pump. West Marine would not take it back said I had to deal with the manufacturer. I bought a different brand for a replacement.

I've owned two of these. Both failed in the ON position. In other words, they left my bilge pump running dry for many hours before I caught the problem. Could not force the units to return to the OFF position, no matter what I tried. The second unit only lasted 13.5 months. Will probably have to replace my bilge pump as a result of the problem.
