Comments about New England Ropes Uni-Fid for Splicing Braid:

For all the whiners about the hook at the blunt end, pause and take a breath... that's it.
Now think of how to remediate the hook getting caught in your bury?
Simply wrap a small piece of quality electrical tape around the end of line to bury, then continue with a wrap or two covering the hook, this helps tremendously with the bury.
When complete, unwrap the tape leaving no adhesive residue, if you used quality tape.
This offset hook is a great design addition to a quality product.

Comments about New England Ropes Uni-Fid for Splicing Braid:

If you're like me, you're shopping for this kit because you want to start splicing lines and you know nothing about it. These fids are great for 1/4-3/8" single and double braid but the best info is on youtube and will utilize a variety of tools. Uni-fids are good but depending on how much burying you want to do the Samson set might be worth a look. Included in this kit - 2 spike/fids and a book. YMMV.

Comments about New England Ropes Uni-Fid for Splicing Braid:

As noted above the instructions are virtually worthless, multiple steps missing or assumed known by instruction writer. Pictures not much help either. If I did not have another source of information I would not buy.

Comments about New England Ropes Uni-Fid for Splicing Braid:

The hook at the end of the fid makes it impossible to use. The hook will catch and never pass through a rope to make a splice. It is impossible to actually create a splice using these. The instructions are good. The videos that New England Ropes has on Youtube all show using a hollow ended fid instead of this stupid hook design. Waste of money. Do not buy. Horrible product.

Comments about New England Ropes Uni-Fid for Splicing Braid:

The hooks at the end of fids snag rope strands, even when wrapped in tape, and get stuck in tight places. Once the hook gets snagged, it's impossible to remove without cutting the rope. Really poor design.

Comments about New England Ropes Uni-Fid for Splicing Braid:

The fid is well made, just not well designed. Most fids have a hollow end where the rope is inserted. The NE fids have a hook instead. It hooks through the rope and holds it securely. However, when you try to use the fid to pull the rope through, the darned hook grabs on everything and is a real bear to work through. Even wrapping the hook with tape doesn't help on tight splices. The hook just tears through the tape. An agony to use. Bought some Samson fids and ditched the NE fids.

Comments about New England Ropes Uni-Fid for Splicing Braid:

I agree completely with Tom from Lexington. WM video uses a hollow fid, and I think a thicker rope than my 3/8". Looks easy. Isn't easy. After several attempts, I can make a sloppy splice. Not what I'm after.

Comments about New England Ropes Uni-Fid for Splicing Braid:

Well I was able to create a decent eye splice but the instructions were useless and pulling the fid through the cover was very difficult. Plus there is no pusher but then again the design doesn't lend itself to pushing.
West marine has a video online that explains how to make an eye splice. It is fabulous. The explantions are clear and the video is too. The presenter doesn't use these stupid hooked fids either.

Comments about New England Ropes Uni-Fid for Splicing Braid:

The product has a nice feel, and New England ropes is an outstanding company with great instructions. While the instructions they provide are quality and helpful to relative beginners, the hooks on the end of the fids are a nightmare to deal with. Alternate brands, with individual fids, will not take significantly more room but will spare the aggravation caused by the hooks. I bought this after learning to splice lines because I thought it would make me feel like a sailor; this product just made me cuss like one.
