Comments about 309 Level Wind Conventional Rod & Reel Combo:

Have deck handing/captaining in Texas for over a decade. We use penn 209's and 309's almost exclusively as they are dirt cheap and our customers, most of which can't fish to save their lives, can use them without too much trouble and have a hard time breaking them. Typically load up our 309's with 40lb ande big game. The drag is better than a penn senator 114h and we have taken everything from 2lb. chicken dolphin to 120lb. wahoo and 350+lb. bull sharks in the ocean, catfish in excess of 60lbs., and gar over 100lbs. in fresh. If you think a reel like this can't handle big fish or a star drag is low quality, you should probably keep throwing your money away on expensive shimanos. With a simple freshwater soak and application of Abu Garcia gear grease they last 2-3seasons and 200+ trips. Pennies per fish at that rate. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that there are simply better reels available- but not without paying considerably more.

Used on Opening day Trophy season and had no issues bringing in a 37 inch 21 lb Striper. Nothing fancy but adequate. Levelwind a plus in getting out the right distance.

Comments about 309 Level Wind Conventional Rod & Reel Combo:

As an avid fisherman, I've used a lot of rods and reels. This year alone I purchased 6 Penn rod and reel combos, 2 different types. 4 out of 6 broke within a month of purchase, 2 within 2 weeks. I'll continue to use classic Penn rods and reels because of the quality, but they can keep their new products. VERY disappointed.

Comments about 309 Level Wind Conventional Rod & Reel Combo:

Great combo for the price. Bought two last year and heading back in this week for two more. Work great from rock fishing to yellowtail. Very balanced feel in your claws. Very little fold-over even with a 63lb Yellowtail on the end of the line...should be able to handle very larg fish and good fighting ones at that.
