I normally deadstick a rod when fluke fishing. The holder is well designed, perhaps too well designed. I have to jiggle the rod back and up to release it from the holder. But that is a good thing because once you lose a rod overboard from using a flimsy rod holder or no holder at all, you will appreciate this rod holder's abilities! Wish I could by the base separate so I could mount in various locations. Had to by 3 additional rod holders in order to get the base that comes with the rod holder so I could jump the rod holders from port to starboard and visa versa.
