Note: These Mercury outboards have 4-stroke engines and, like virtually all 4-stroke engines, depend on oil in their crankcases for lubrication. To prevent the oil from leaking during transport, the engines are not shipped with oil in their crankcases. You must put the correct amount and grade of oil in the crankcase prior to the first use or you will cause extensive damage to your engine, which is not covered by your engine’s warranty. Please read the owner’s manual for more information. For U.S. shipment ONLY. |

Comments about Mercury Marine 4hp & 6hp 4 Stroke Outboards:
I have a 4HP with integral tank that is great for getting my sailboat in/out of port. You can also run it with an external tank, which I do for longer runs (if there is no wind!!). I found it difficult to start when running with the intergral tank until I learned a little trick - keep the vent shut - this seems to help pressurize the fuel system, as you would with the bulb on an external tank. Apart from that the motor runs great! For all I know this may be in the Owners Manual, but who looks at those? ;)
Pros
Cons
- Hard to start out of box
- Mercury Tech Rep no help
- Needs repair on 1st day

Comments about Mercury Marine 4hp & 6hp 4 Stroke Outboards:
I wanted to use the 6 hp on my sailboat but right out of the box, in a whole day of trying and a lot of phone calls, and with fresh gas, only got it to run three times. First 2 times only ran 30 seconds and the last time ran continously but developed a bad gas leak from carburetor. Taking for service - will test warranty. [...] nor Mercury Tech rep were any help!

Comments about Mercury Marine 4hp & 6hp 4 Stroke Outboards:
I grew up in a marina in the 50-60's. This motor is so easy to work on. I let it sit for too long and gas went bad. Drain plug on carb bottom easy to get at. Fresh fuel and two pulls, it's running! Idles just fine for pushing our canoe upriver at a snails pace. Very quiet for wildlife watching.

Comments about Mercury Marine 4hp & 6hp 4 Stroke Outboards:
use this motor on the SB-275 inflatable.
Runs plenty fast enough for me.
This motor is the exact same as the 6 hp except for the RPM and internal fuel tank.
Campared side by side at the mercury marine website but opted for the convenince of internal tank for puttering around marina / anchorage.
Comments about Mercury Marine 4hp & 6hp 4 Stroke Outboards:
The motor starts easily, idles smoothly at very low RPM, unlike a two stroke. There is no need to mix oil with the gasoline. Throttle response is excellent at all power settings. However, since this outboard has only one cylinder there is much vibration during operation, especially low throttle settings. If it weren't for the vibration, this motor would be perfect and rate 5 stars.
