This keeps the boat from sucking water back into a drain that originated below the water line. The vent kills the siphon. Install this on a drain line that needs to pump overboard. Properly installed 10 or more inches above the waterline (when the boat is fully loaded) by raising the height of the drain to attach it to the vented loop using worm gear hose clamps
