I think these water shorts are great for lots of casual uses. A zippered pocket to hold anything you can't afford to lose and they work well swimming, on the boat, or at lunch in a restaurant. However, I tried them body surfing and the elastic in the waist band isn't strong enough to stand up to getting tumbled. I kept tightening it and it kept stretching. I wouldn't use them for any kind of surfing.
