Designed specifically for sailboats, these stylish, dedicated-function instruments cover wind and close-hauled wind options in analog and digital formats. Excellent viewing angles on large analog displays for both day and night conditions, with red backlighting for improved visibility, and large simple pushbutton controls make i60 instruments extremely easy to see and use. Low power consumption.

Multiple data source support (SeaTalk and SeaTalkng, NMEA 2000-compatible interfaces) eliminates potential data conflicts. They are also simple to install with front-mount design, and they match the cutouts for your old ST60+ instruments.

i60 Wind Instrument: Shows analog and digital data. Highlighted close-hauled segments. Calculates apparent (relative) and true wind speed/angle (true wind requires speed-through-water data). Features maximum wind speed alarm. Lightweight masthead transducer w/97'6" cable.

Pros

  • Nice Masthead Unit
  • Slick Design

Cons

  • Incomplete Documentation
  • No Power Connection
  • Requires Network Backbone
  • very expensive

Best Uses

  • Larger boats
  • Racing

I recently bought the i60 wind instrument with the masthead unit (vane and cups). The combined package includes about 100 ft of cable to connect masthead unit to instrument.
I bought the unit to replace an old standalone datamarine masthead vane and instrument.
Although the Raymarine unit is very pricey, I was pleased with the set-up, until I started installation and I could not find a power connection cable (this was not an oversight; none is included in the box).
What nobody bothered to tell me (either in the store, or in the manual) is that a Seatalk ng backbone is required to operate the unit, even if it is used as a standalone instrument. There is no way to just connect it to a powersupply and operate it. As a matter of fact, WestMarine store personnel could not tell me how to power the unit, the instrument manual doesn't mention it and the Raymarine website doesn't have any information either. I had to go to a different marine supply store, who had to make a call to Raymarine to find out that at a minimum, a SeaTalk ng starter kit is required to connect the unit to DC power and make it operational. Needless to say that a starter kit is not cheap (and in my case added a further 3 weeks to my installation timeline). While Raymarine sells a power cable for SeaTalk instruments, by itself this is no use without the rest of the network backbone hardware.
For smaller boats, where skippers are just interested in a few standalone instruments (wind, speed, depth) and not a network where every instrument talks to every other instrument, that makes the i60 a cumbersome and expensive option.
Bottom line:
1) Raymarine should improve their website and product documentation (and include standalone installation as a covered option);
2) West Marine should train store staff to provide relevant information when ordering this sort of expensive kit (additional info in the catalog would also be helpful).
