I attached this antenna to my brand-new mobile Standard Horizon HX2200 GPS/AIS VHF Marine Radio. Crystal clear reception from as far away as 21 miles. Easy to install with new style connectors, no need to use a soldering gun.

Comments about Shakespeare Mariner 8900 8' 6dB VHF Antenna with Silver-Plated Elements & Gold-Plated Connector:

Good strong antenna, great signal, works great on my walk around fishing boat. Came with a connector was very easy to set up. After setting it up I was picking up traffic from the coast guard in San Pedro, Ca at my house in Fontana. I was also picking up marine traffic from the house. Offshore I could traffic and Coast Guard messages from well over 40 miles. No complaints with this antenna.

Comments about Shakespeare Mariner 8900 8' 6dB VHF Antenna with Silver-Plated Elements & Gold-Plated Connector:

I purchased this antenna a few weeks ago. The day I installed the antenna I called out for a radio check. I got a response from someone 35 miles away from my location. Finally last week I took my boat out onto Lake Erie. The antenna did not disappoint. I called one of my boating friends who was 25 miles away. They heard me and responded. While crossing the lake I was listening in to both sides of a conversation that was happening 37 miles from my location. The performance of this antenna does not disappoint at all.

The Sheakespeare 8900 is an amazing Marine VHF Antenna. Reception is clear and signal is solid! Your VHF radio is only as good as the antenna that is transmitting. I went the extra cost due to the fact that I don't nickel and dime safety when time might play a factor in an emergency situation. Very happy over my purchase and pleased with the gold plated connector! I also like the thickness of the antenna. Very durable and quality made.

Also, remember to get a Free MMSI # at BoatUS and program it into your VHF as well as connecting your VHF to your chartplotter!

Comments about Shakespeare Mariner 8900 8' 6dB VHF Antenna with Silver-Plated Elements & Gold-Plated Connector:

Local west marine was out of stock for a replacement 5225 XP I was replacing, as well as comparable 8' VHF antennas. Took a chance on this top-of-the-line Mariner 8900, grumbling about the premium price.

Installed antenna on boat with two radios and an existing 5225 XP. Came with a "clamp-on" PL-259 connector, which I was dubious about since I normally solder my own on. Turned out this clamp-on PL-259 connector was awesome.

Tested this with an SWR meter and the VSWR was quite low, but the power output was showing a bit under 30 watts. (Radio maxes out at 25 watts, right?) Swapped with another radio and I got the same exact readings. Compared to my "good XP 5225", I had a bit higher VSWR and power of about 20 watts.

Out in open water between Florida and the Bahamas, I found the reception to be outstanding and communication with other boats is clear. I'm so impressed that I went back later to purchase a second one, especially since it was on sale. I definitely feel like I got great value for what I paid for these 8900's.

My only con, if any, is with the packaging. The tube itself is great, but the ends of the tube are secured with a flimsy, stapled-on plastic cap. Inside the cap is some foam to protect the antenna. Like others I've purchased, this end-cap is often chewed up from the shipping or something. By now you'd think they'd have a much better end cap that securely protects both ends of the antenna.
