Improve upon the Billfish? No way.

How about 28% lighter? Way.

It's a given that Sperry's Billfish Boat Shoes are already established as classics in the boat shoe world. That's why it's all the more impressive that they've figured out a way to improve them and still retain all the best features. The Billfish Ultralite 3-Eye Boat Shoes aren't just lighter (although 28% lighter than the originals is rather remarkable considering how durable and comfortable they are), some say they're even better looking. Slip on a pair before your next all-day waterlife adventure and we think you'll be sold on this design as well. Are we that sure? We'll just start at the top and work our way down to the very heart and sole of these versatile shoes:

The Uppers: Premium nubuck and full-grain leather that's stain- and water-resistant is combined with nylon air-mesh panels so they not only look great on, they're also durable, long-lasting and supportive. In addition to adding an element of style, the mesh panels serve to keep your feet cooler than all-leather uppers since they breathe and let water drain out when the unavoidable splash or dunk occurs (like that ever happens when you're on a boat) and then dry quickly.

Genuine Handsewn Tru-Moc Construction: Why is this important? In a word, comfort. By hand fitting the leather to a last (a shoe form) and then hand stitching it with needles and waxed thread, you get a timeless moccasin upper that fits true to size and width. Moccasin construction also provides more flexibility so it conforms to your feet, not the other way around. The result is a pair of shoes that are so comfortable you'll want to wear them even when you're just wishing you're on a boat.

The Lacing: A feature Sperry shoes are known for—their 360° Lacing System™ with rust proof eyelets. Unlike lesser boat shoes, Sperry provides for a secure fit all the way around your feet, not just across your insteps. Why does that matter? Remember the unavoidable splash or dunk we mentioned earlier? Once your shoes get wet (and they will get wet unless your boating only involves cruise ships or mega yachts), they will have a tendency to separate themselves from you if they aren't snugged down tight around the outside of your feet. The lacing also improves overall stability since it will keep your shoes from slipping around on your feet.

Padded Tongues: This might seem like an insignificant feature...until you tie your shoes really tight so they stay on when the going gets wet! No one wants insteps that feel like they've been in a vice all day. The right amount of padding in the right place means these shoes will feel just as comfortable at the end of the day as when you first put them on. Sometimes the little things make all the difference.

Heel Cups: An essential part of the full-length footbeds, ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) heel cups have been added to this high-impact zone to absorb and disperse shock. These offer a way to stop foot, leg and back pain before it even has a chance to start.

The Midsoles: The lightweight EVA midsoles used in the Ultralites are the reason these shoes not only provide outstanding cushioning, but also bring down the overall weight by 28%. By virtue of the fact that they run the length of the shoes, these cushioned midsoles provide all-day, under-foot shock absorption whether you're bracing against pounding waves or doing your happy dance after catching the biggest fish of the day.

The Outsoles: Authentic boat shoes wouldn't be complete without proper soles to help keep you from being an MOB (Man Overboard) statistic. The Billfish Ultralite Boat Shoes are no exception, featuring rubber outsoles with Adaptive Wave-Siping™—razor thin, wavy slits in the rubber—and deeper grooves to channel water from underneath so you'll enjoy ultimate traction whether your footing is wet or dry. In fact, they grip even better when coming in contact with wet gelcoat (what boat decks are typically covered in). You'll appreciate how they keep you firmly stuck to the surface when you're scrambling across a heeling deck in a sudden squall. Plus, in addition to their nonslip qualities, these soles are non-marking. That's right, the crew (more than likely you) won't have to scrub off the ugly black marks that ordinary shoes will leave on the previously mentioned white gelcoat.

Finally, you don't have to wear socks with your Billfish Ultralite Boat Shoes; however, if you'd feel more comfortable we offer a selection of socks that are specifically made to wear with boat shoes and not show above the uppers so it looks like you aren't wearing socks. Imported.
