Have had this radio for about six months now, absolutely love it and very happy with the purchase! Used it volunteering at a local event and was able to get a better connection with the nearest coast guard station than the Coast guards own handheld at the event were. It's lightweight but rugged, to carry so it's always ready in an emergency. Battery life better than advertised, and since it's charged by USB I can charge from outlet, computer, car, or inexpensive solar unit.

During summers I work with a local Parks and Recreation department, one camp we offer takes kids out to a fairly remote island with almost no cell service, hardly any regular visitors, and only sporadic State Park ranger visits. I keep the radio with me at all times, around camp, hiking the island, et, confident that I could easily contact coast guard or local police boat if any sort of emergency occurred.

Great buy, couldn't recommend highly enough!

This would be a great VHF radio for an active kayaker IF it had a way to attach a lanyard to the body of the radio. The only way to attach a lanyard is to the removeable beltclip. That's not good enough in my opinion for a kayaker.

Comments about Standard Horizon HX300 Compact Floating Handheld VHF Radio with USB Charger:

I use this for kayak fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. The ease of use makes it great. It is easy to listen to NOAA reports before launching in the morning and I love that the size is perfect for the radio pocket on my fishing pfd. The price was reasonable and so far the radio has been all I want and need it to be.

        Service and delivery comments:

        Service was awesome. No complaints.

Comments about Standard Horizon HX300 Compact Floating Handheld VHF Radio with USB Charger:

This is my favorite Standard Horizon portable because of the features, price, size, and especially weight. The battery lasts seemingly forever if you aren't transmitting much, and if you wear it on your belt its so light weight you will forget it's there. The light was a major high point for me deciding to buy it. Floating is a must, flashing is a bonus. The only down side is that it lacks a traditional on/off control knob, so getting used to only having push buttons was a bit annoying. The plus size of that however is that you can't accidentally turn the volume off or inadvertently turn the radio off because there is no knob to get snagged on clothing or anything else.

Excellent product for back up and safety. My antennae on my VHF failed on me and this product was an excellent back up. I also use in my other small boat while hunting and crabbing. Excellent for mobility and I made a custom spot in the boat to hold and charge in the plug in port.

Comments about Standard Horizon HX300 Compact Floating Handheld VHF Radio with USB Charger:

It's light and fairly small. Its also pretty easy to use. I switch between boats a lot and not all of them have a working radio. Like others have pointed out, it would be nice if you didn't have to use the belt clip to use a tether. But figure this radio will do me until they finally come out with AIS handhelds.

Comments about Standard Horizon HX300 Compact Floating Handheld VHF Radio with USB Charger:

          Nice handheld. Great Value.
Light, easy to use. Scanning features found on more expensive models.
          FLOATS! A big plus.
Standard USB charging cord, also a plus.
I bought this as a backup radio in case of power loss or emergency on the boat.
Perfect for my use, because I have DSC on my fixed mount, with GPS Integrated.
If you do not have GPS somehow connected to your primary radio, I would recommend buying one with GPS built-in.
Highly recommended as a back up emergency radio.
