Comments about Standard Horizon HX870 Floating Handheld VHF Radio with GPS:

I like the radio. On a recent trip to Catalina Island I spent a lot of time with the radio and manual to get everything setup. You need to set it up with your MMSI number or you get a warning every time you turn it on. I also set a waypoint to see how it worked.

Comments about Standard Horizon HX870 Floating Handheld VHF Radio with GPS:

I purchased the radio for use in our tender, back-up and a second radio for use when cruising congested waters. I like Tender to main ship DSC capability even though the MMSI on both radios is the same. Built in GPS and emergency calling is good. I did a DSC Test to the Coast Guard from 7 miles out, and the response was great.

replaced an 851 which developed a short and would cut off when you keyed the mic. I liked the 851 better. It had 4 power options and this has 3. You go from 6 watts to 2 or 1. The 851 allowed option for 5. This will go through fully charged batteries in about 5 hours and will start to decrease power. The power output will indicate full power when in fact you do not have full power. Also if you use regular batteries the max output is 1 watt. The GPS is great. If you only use it for a short period of time it works fine. I like the radio but it could have been much better with a couple of changes.
