Comments about Vion Marine Mini 2000 Hand Bearing Compass:

Before you purchase this or any other prism rear-card reading compass, get an estimate of how wide your fingers appear (in degrees) when your hand is held out at arms length, and fingers are side by side together (no spaces). Compare this estimation of width to what you read for your fingers in this compass in one position against the sighting scale. I found the compass degrees are really a little over 1/2 degree. (I used a lot more accurate test than fingers). THERE WAS A FUNDAMENTAL DESIGN FLAW IN THE COMPASS OPTICS!!!. It means there is only one point in the sighting view where the reading is accurate (NOT the entire view above the sighting scale!). If you are about to navigate a boat in a situation where a 2 degree error can be dangerous (like putting you on the rocks) - perform the above test or be at peril. The compass appears deceptively attractive. They may have corrected this in some versions - but DO THAT TEST! The Plastimo Iris 50 added a red rhumb line to address this problem. The degree reading is ONLY accurate at the rhumb line. The optics are otherwise similar to the Vion 2000 Mini. Vion (Morin) has opted to NOT go with the "Global" balanced card - really no balance at all. This is to their credit. The tilt to the card would have been a lot more annoying in a "Global" card than the chance I would use it in the Southern Hemisphere.

Comments about Vion Marine Mini 2000 Hand Bearing Compass:

so when electronic communications fail or u want a second opinion on your heading or traingulating a position with a chart, this unit sights easily and reads magnetic compass in degrees, with luminescense at night.
