Comments about West Marine Abaco 13.5 Sit-On-Top Tandem Kayaks:

I needed to buy a fishing kayak for fishing in the gulf, and in the Tampa Bay intercoastal waters. I went in to West Marine to get a Prowler kayak. But when I saw the Abaco, I realized that it was essentially the same size and width, but had way more room inside - I find all that space for inner hull storage to be a waste of real estate for a fishing kayak. This thing has almost the entire length of the 13.5 foot deck available for use to the fisherman. The only modifications that I had to do was add two rod holders, a seat, a paddle holder and an anchor troley. Now it's a better fishing kayak than a prowler, or any other fishing kayak that comes with half the hull sealed off and useless. It also carries over 500 lbs of cargo! Again - beats most other fishing kayaks of this class in weight capacity alone.

I have taken this out fishing in Tampa Bay and the intercoastal waters, and find it to be really stable, moves fast enough for my liking, and can carry me (250lbs) plus all my fishing stuff comfortably. With all that weight, the water still doesn't even come up the scupper holes. My butt was completely dry and so was the deck.

I can also convert this back to a tandem kayak by moving my seat back (I sit in the middle seat in fishing mode) and adding a front seat for my kids. So it's a tandem yak, and a really awesome fishing yak for less than the price of a Prowler!

The only thing that sucks is how heavy this thing is. It feels to be about 100 lbs. I'm a big guy and can put this on top of my mini van by myself, but it's no easy feat and requires a lot of strength and balance! Also, in fresh water, this thing is the equivalent of paddling a refrigerator filled with rocks. It's SLOW. But in salt water (because of the difference in bouyancy) it floats high, and cuts through the water quickly.

Comments about West Marine Abaco 13.5 Sit-On-Top Tandem Kayaks:

We do enjoy this SOT tandem kayak. We purchased an extension for the trailer hitch on our truck and transport it using the bed of our truck with the extension.

Our biggest complaint is the plastic cover for the 8" hull access and storage area. IT GETS STUCK because it is so easily cross-threaded!!! We have had to get a screwdriver to remove the entire cover to get to our storage bag AND truck keys. (HINT: Be sure to carry a Phillips screwdriver with you if you intend to use the storage area!) We are actually planning to ONLY replace the frame and forget about putting the cover back on -- we don't kayak in rough waters, so we're not concerned about water coming into the compartment.

We would like to see West Marine carry a better access storage cover.

Comments about West Marine Abaco 13.5 Sit-On-Top Tandem Kayaks:

I've been a recreational kayaker for a few years and could NOT pass up this deal. BTW, I have a replaced hip and 2 replaced knees, but this ride-on-top was very comfortable and easy to handle on the water on my first solo ride.
I was worried that the pre-formed/fixed foot slots would be a problem (instead of having adjustable foot pedals), but they were also very comfortable and I fit in them nicely.
The built-in scuppers work very well too - it's nice that I will never have to bail this one!
This kayak took the waves very nicely on the Long Island Sound (while I accompanied my wife on her stand-up paddleboard) and I can't wait to use it to go fishing as well. Love the fact that its weight capacity can handle two 250 pound adults AND 50 pounds of gear if necessary. This is going to be BIG FUN for a BIG guy - yeah, baby!
So what if it weighs a few pounds... so do I!
I do like the idea I read in another review about upgrading those plastic gunwale fixtures/loops with stainless steel ones because the OEM ones break a little too easily. Everything else seems fantastic. Hope this helps!

Comments about West Marine Abaco 13.5 Sit-On-Top Tandem Kayaks:

My friend and I bought this kayak to take out for long day trips. We had not seen it in person before purchasing it and were surprised to find that it had scupper holes in the bottom and did not come with anything to plug them up. We decided to try it without the plugs. On our first trip we went out in salt water marshes to practice. The scupper holes were not a problem at all they were actually very helpful when the dog fell overboard and completely soaked the kayak. All the water was able to drain out. As far as the stability of the kayak we were shocked. The two of us and the dog were sitting on the side of the kayak and we could not flip it. We then tried standing and rocking it to see if it would flip and we couldn't. It was also easy for us to maneuver through the narrower parts of the marsh. It does weight about 70lbs but my friend and I (too women with minimal upper body strength) were able to get it on top the the truck with out extensive difficulty. We comfortable fit two women over 5'8'' and a 45lb boxer and could have probably fit the two of us and a shorter adult. The only thing negative is that I can assume it would be uncomfortable without kayak seats Over all it was an excellent choice and when we bought it we got a $100 mail in rebate for a west marine gift card.

Comments about West Marine Abaco 13.5 Sit-On-Top Tandem Kayaks:

Have many kayaks, needed a more pet friendly open SOT at a reasonable price. This is a bargin Confluence model. Because it the 2.5 person design it keeps you dry in light waves, the trade off is weather cocking. Replace the eyelets with stainless because the OEMs are fragile. Overall great value.

Comments about West Marine Abaco 13.5 Sit-On-Top Tandem Kayaks:

I have owned about five kayaks and fished in salt and fresh water from every one of them including a 17 foot sea kayak, two sit on tops and even a Nucanoe Frontier 12...

The Abaco was on sale about a month ago in the local store for a screaming deal at 329. I picked it up and put on two Yakattack Geartrac 90 tracks to place rod holders for trolling. I put in two seats made by Surf to Summit and that was it.

My daughter and I fish a lot from the kayaks and this thing tracks pretty good for being a two seated kayak and without having a rudder. I usually paddle alone and my daughter hangs out. We have enough room to store a few drinks, snacks and jackets. I put the fishing net in the back but I'll probably get a Ram mount for it in the future.

Anyway we just spent two days fishing in central Washington and this thing performed perfectly. You can't get a better deal on a good two seated kayak made by Perception. It has the West Marine logo on it.

Comments about Abaco 13.5 Sit-On-Top Tandem Kayaks:

I bought this kayak so I can take my 5yr old fishing with me. It has way exceeded my expectations. Yes, it big because it is a multi person kayak, and it's a little difficult to put on top of a car yourself. It tracks straight, and maneuvers way better than I expected for being so big. Even with just me paddling from the back. Another thing I like about it is the layout. I had all these plans to put fishing rod holders on it, but all the scupper holes are in a perfect spot were you could put your rods and not be in the way of paddling. Most sit in kayaks that I've been in, the water level comes up and gets me wet, but even with myself, my wife, and 5year old in it I stay dry. The only thing I would change about this kayak if I were West Marine would be to add paddle holders.

Comments about West Marine Abaco 13.5 Sit-on-top Kayak, Lime/blue:

The Abaco 13.5 is a polyethylene molded sit-on-top kayak. The underwater tri-form hull and 32" width makes for a very stable platform. It also means this is a big unit that needs 2 people to carry for launch/recovery. Paddles and tracks well and especially like the unique seat arrangement that has a center pad for use when only 1 paddler is onboard. I suggest the sit-on seat/backrest is a worthwhile option ;-)

          Service and delivery comments:

The size & weight of the unit requires road shipment. It was delivered from South Carolina and came with just a plastic bag covering. This had ripped in transit & almost resulted in the loss of the enclosed shipping waybill & user documentation. The lack of protective packaging also meant the hull arrive with scratches (not enough to cause return).
