WEST MARINE
Abaco 9.5 Sit-On-Top Kayak, Lime/Blue

$359.99

Truck Freight
Model # 14296040 | Mfg # 93526304
In stock online.

Our lowest priced adult sit-on-top kayak is still big on features!

Lightweight and easy to paddle, our Abaco 9.5 Kayak is designed so that novice and experienced paddlers alike will enjoy recreational paddling in conditions ranging from flat water to flowing rivers to small surf. At a compact 9'6" length, this easy-to-store kayak makes a simple travel companion. Just strap it on top of your car or in the back of your pickup and head for the water.

If you're new to kayaking, why choose a sit-on-top over a sit-inside kayak? While you're more likely to capsize with a sit-on-top kayak, getting back in is much easier for beginners than learning the eskimo roll with a sit-inside. The center of gravity is higher and a little less stable, but you have a better view of the water (and potential obstacles) around you. Since you are also more open to the elements, expect to get wet. You'll want to wear clothing that dries quickly if the water's warm or provides warmth when you're in cold water environments.

Hull Design

The roto-molded polyethylene hull on the Abaco 9.5 is flexible and impact resistant so it will endure many years of the drops, dings, scrapes and various other "oops" moments in the typical life of a recreational kayak.

Comfort

The Abaco 9.5 features a roomy cockpit with several details that make it comfortable for most paddlers. A molded-in foot brace system allows you to adjust your leg position for optimal paddling and then shift positions or stretch out during the day as needed. Scupper holes are found in several places so water that finds its way over the deck will automatically drain out so you won't sit in a puddle of water all day. The seat is molded-in, but you can add an adjustable, padded back support and/or a padded seat bottom (sold separately) if you'd like.

Deck

Deluxe bow and stern rigging give you places to stow items like dry bags (sold separately), jackets and other essentials within easy reach. You'll also find a small bow dry hatch with deck plate to stash small valuables out of the way. There are lots of pad eyes positioned around the deck so you can attach a multitude of accessories. Bow and stern handles not only help with carrying, they also provide handy tie-off points for docking or anchoring your kayak. Molded-in side handles and a stern deck well complete the feature set.

If you don't already own them or it's time to replace the ones you have, remember to order a kayak paddle and a life jacket (both sold separately) so you'll be ready to splash your kayak as soon as possible!

I bought this kayak while recovering from severely fractured foot. I have now used it 4-6 times a week in every weather condition in fresh and saltwater, for about 3 months. I chose a sit on top because it was easy to get into. Despite the website, this kayak is heavy, but is solidly build out of really heavy duty plastic. In calm fresh water it glides decently through the water, but feels heavy and "pushes" water in salt water chop. The drainage holes are HUGE and all over the kayak, causing water to shoot up like little geysers in chop...so you constantly get wet (more of a colder weather issue). The deck rigging is great, but after adding several more eyelets it is far more usefull. I love the cargo area in the rear which is large enough to carry even a 5-gallon bucket securely with room to spare. After several fishing trips, I've noticed rods securely fit in the rear (actually any) drainage holes. While paddling I usually stuff the rod(s) under the bow/ stern deck bungees to eliminate drag. Eventually I'd like to add a couple after market rod holders, but drainage holes work almost as well. This kayak needs seat...I have yet to get one though. Also the kayak anchor kit from west marine is a must for fishing. In summary, the abaco 9.5 is an extremely well built fishing kayak without the usual fishing add ons...

I have a sit in kayak I use in Montauk Lake which is stable, fast and comfortable....the hull is smooth.....this kayak has a very rough bottom like a 36 piece of sand paper. My kayak has a hull like glass, same company, made a couple years ago...this new kayak is stable but doesn't track well and is a slug.....so slow...very disappointed....maybe we will wax it or sand it smooth....we would return it but have used it once and scratched it on the dock.....

Comments about West Marine Abaco 9.5 Sit-on-top Kayak, Yellow/orange:

I like this kayak. I own three of them. We have fun with them. Small children find them easy to paddle. Because of the low profile and length, they are easy to transport. The handles make them easy to carry. They have a nice cargo area in back with bungies and eyelets, but you will need scupper plugs or dry bag, or things get wet. My complaint is the molded seat has no back support and extended kayaking becomes uncomfortable for my lower back. However, I remedied this with Ocean Kayak seatbacks (and scupper plugs). We use these boats for beach play and kayaking narrow creeks.

Comments about West Marine Abaco 9.5 Sit-on-top Kayak, Yellow/orange:

I bought this as an extra kayak for friends and family. Know this...a longer kayak moves faster and stays straight with less adjustments to you paddle strokes, however this kayak is great. It is still faster than a SUP and is stable in the ocean. The advantage is easy transport and storage.

Attention Pam, re your wish that this kayak had molded cup holder.. I bought for my Abaco single and my double kayaks, the http://www.westmarine.com/buy/ronstan--drink-holder-white--14084032 also from West Marine. Just peel off back and put in place. Totally solves drink holder problem! Great product to go on a great kayak!

This is my first kayak. I've rented before, mostly Ocean kayaks, 13.5. The tracking is not quite as easy, but it's a 9.5, so I didn't really expect it to be. It's easy to load & unload, and I'm not as strong as I used to be! Getting another one, so I can take a friend!

Comments about West Marine Abaco 9.5 Sit-on-top Kayak, Yellow/orange:

I got this kayak to help me rehab after shoulder surgery. It has helped my recovery amazingly. I love it so much that several of my friends have purchased one now and I bought a second for my husband or friends to use to come along. We have a larger boat and both kayaks are secured along side it in the slip,so the weight isn't such an issue for us and my friend considers it part of the overall workout. I like the ease of getting in and out of the sit on top. A molded in cup holder would be a much appreciated addition.

Comments about West Marine Abaco 9.5 Sit-on-top Kayak, Yellow/orange:

I bought this kayak a year ago and decided to really put it through its paces before reviewing. I must say im very pleased over all. I wanted a simple, reasonably light kayak for mostly playing around but an occasional overnight trip. This yak fits the bill. Its a little slow for a long trek with gear, but it gets me to my camp a couple miles away pretty easily. If you overload it, it will plow water, but that is to be expected. It is stable enough to stand up in and it handles chop and swells very well, although you will get a bit wet. By giving up some length and speed, you gain ease of transport and storage, which was important for me. I will be buying a matching one next month for my wife. Finally, adding a seat is a MUST. Now that I have one, I wouldn't use it without one.

My wife and I were looking for basic, simple, sturdy craft for day trips in the Sea of Cortez, where we live. The Abaco 9.5 met all our important requirements, though two of them barely fit on our Nissan Sentra's roof. The 9.5 is nearly perfect for us, since speed and directional stability aren't major issues. It absolutely requires the optional seats, and the Scupper Pup cart works very well.
