Comments about West Marine Cayman 11.5 Sit-On-Top Angler Kayak, Yellow/Brown/Black:

I purchased this yak after many demo days and research into a kayak that had a stable fishing platform wile standing. Standing was key because of back issues and if you ever paddled in a sit-in for a extended period of time you know how your legs and rear get. I was going to purchase a old town predator for 3 times the amount of money this costs and I'm glad I didn't! Your basically getting a bare bones predator platform that you can make your own. I tricked this yak out to the max with some incredible options making it one of a kind. Added a folding boat seat, redid anchor trolly with a Cooper anchor, tie down cleat to front hatch, 2 articulated scotty rod mounts,2 custom pvc rear rod holders for trolling, eye attachments for tools and whatever else, reinforced standing hull area, added 6 Inch hatch to rear of kayak, raymarine dragonfly fish finder, a rudder system with the ability to steer with added foot pegs, ran the cable through the inside of kayak, led lights for night fishing and a electric motor attached to rudder turning this "cheap" cayman into the WAR MACHINE! This doesn't come with some drawbacks tho. All the negatives can be easily fix tho so please do not pass because of the need to use some elbow grease. Who wants a stock yak anyway?? First and foremost the front hatch. It's impossible to open when it gets hot. The hatch being black and the gasket they used will expand and the thing won't open. You will need to hose down the hatch to get it operational again. First thing you need to do is add a tie down boat cleat. This will serve a few functions. First the ability to open the hatch at any time. Second you can side rod in to hold wile paddling if need be and last but not least in a emergency you got a tie point if you need a tow. If you feel that's to much to add the cleat then remove the gasket entirely. Unless your in some whitewater Rapids or major chop and swells you will stay dry. For insurance add some Teflon tape if that makes you feel better. Purchase a quality paddle. This is a must for most all SOT and more so standing yaks due to them being very wide. This kayak handles great for the stability it gives in return. I could see with a cheap paddle it being a bit slow to get going. Weight is a solid 65 70 lbs. I'm 5"10 150 and with a custom redneck roof rack { foam blocks I got from job site attached to exercise mat. Traced hull with pvc pipe then carved out with a small hand saw.} and can pick it up over my head no problem onto my acura Tl. For some this may be a problem but if you are looking at this yak chances are you will have no problem. Buy this yak if you want a beast of a fishing platform for dirt cheap.
