Comments about West Marine Multi-Die Ratcheting Crimper Kit:

I got totally upset when my current tools crushed the connector in two, when I gave the connector a pull and the wire came out. If I did not have a small CC Console all the other crimpers would be rusting in the sea as I threw them overboard in disgust. This is a great tool that takes seconds to set it up for the correct crimp. My only issue is the release mechanism is a bit awkward to release if you haven't set the pressure for the crimp up front.

Comments about West Marine Multi-Die Ratcheting Crimper Kit:

Dies are different from replacement dies I have been able to find, so if one wears out, you're out of luck. Far more important, though, is that this is not the right tool for crimping heat shrink connectors, which are what you should be using for all power lines in your boat: especially critical systems like running lights, the power to your radio &c. For those you need a single crimp tool. I cannot for the life of me understand why this tool does not come with a single crimp die set.
That being said, this is a great unit, high quality, just what you need for standard coax, and several other crimp terminals. To be fair, nobody else who offers a similar tool includes or offers a single crimp die set with it, either (why not?).

I use it on my personal boat. The ratchet applies more pressure than you can apply normally.

Works great. Perfect crimp every time and changing dies is easy. Very high quality both tool and dies. Made a big job so much easier and faster. Wish I'd gotten this long ago.

            Doesn't always crimp well

Comments about West Marine Multi-Die Ratcheting Crimper Kit:

I used this product to crimp small (#18) wire into the small size (red) ANCOR marine terminals and butt connectors. I was very frustrating, as the tool would not completely crimp the wire; it would repeatedly fail the "tug on the wire" test, with the wire slipping out of the supposedly crimped connector.

I finally used multiple crimps, both on the metal sleeve in the connector and on the insulation, followed by heating the connector with a heat gun to shrink the insulation and get a water-tight seal, and that followed by slipping a larger size heat-shrink tubing over the entire crimped assembly and heat-shrinking that. So far, no water ingress into the connectors, but I still do not completely trust the connection for long-term use, because it failed the initial tug-on-the-wire test.

I will try again later, with another ratcheting crimper, this time one from ANCOR Marine, the company that makes the connectors, rather this West Marine branded crimper.
