Product Description

Big on features, yet easily stowed, this compact rollup makes an ideal tender whenever onboard space is limited but you still want the capacity to bring all your gear aboard. The weight capacity has almost doubled from prior models and is now the best in class. Rigid plywood transom and a slatted wood and fabric floor offers rapid setup and takedown in a non-planing design that easily handles outboard motors up to 6HP, however even a 4HP motor is plenty to power this boat. Two-color styling utilizes longitudinally-cut German Heytex fabric to create a distinctive, easily-maintained look in a highly functional dinghy that features USA-made Halkey-Roberts valves and a wooden bench seat. Includes aluminum oars, oarlocks, lifelines, towing rings, bow handle, inflation pump, carry bag and repair kit.

I use it as a tender to my 35' motor yacht. I keep it on the swim step using swing arm style C davits and keep it covered. I run a Suzuki 2.5hp 4stroke outboard. I cut some indoor/outdoor carpet the shape of the floor and placed it inside using Velcro so my pup is more comfortable and it makes the floor more durable with my things inside.

I am 175lbs and my dog is 20lbs. What I never expected was to find that this boat actually planes with me about midship and my dog in the bow. And yes I did say 2.5hp!! I was extremely surprised to discover this but certainly it will not plane with two people or in choppy water. This should not be expected of course so I'm only stating this as to my complete surprise.

I know of no issue with the valves from my observation. Most likely ppl received their boats with the valve stems locked in the open position and they were not familiar with how to set them correctly. And since I am so far leaving mine inflated I have had no reason to lock them open for deflating the boat.

This is my fourth inflatable dinghy in many years of boating. 2 Zodiacs, an Avon and now this West Marine RU3. I am extremely happy with this boat and engine combination. I use it primarily to harbor and estuary cruise with an adult beverage and my boatdog on warm afternoons/weekends at the boat. This is not a sport boat and West Marine is clear about that.

In November '13 I purchased this inflatable boat when it was on sale. It has been in the box in my garage until this past Friday. After my first use of it this weekend I noticed that there are three abraded spots on the bottom, one is actually a hole that now leaks water. The inflatable tubes are fine, it is the soft bottom that has the problem abrasions and hole. These are below the floor slats. The only surfaces the bottom of this boat contacted were the water, the fiberglass transom and swim platform of my boat when I launched and then retrieved it from the water, and the concrete floating dock at the marina where I deflated it.

I can't believe that the (rubber??) bottom of this boat is so fragile that the user can't safely pull it in and out of the water aboard a fiberglass boat and onto a floating dock. The inflatable was not beached or towed.
The warranty says abrasions are not covered but I contend that the bottom of this boat is not suitable for normal expected use as a fold up tender for a larger boat. Normal expected use, the first time, resulted in this hole and these abrasions that will eventually evolve into holes with any other normal use. Maybe I just got a bad one, I can't believe the bottom gets holes with really minimal contact on the first use. We'll see if and how WM customer service responds to my complaint.

Great deal and durable.

Comments about West Marine PRU-3 Performance Roll-Up Inflatable Boat:

If you can't tie your shoes on your own or spell the word "acceptable" without asking Siri, this boat isn't for you. If you are a rum drinking sailboat captain and sort of favor captain Ron, this is your boat. It does what it was made to do and it does it great. I've owned since '13 and used it, no leaks, no problems.
When it fails, I will report it here, however when I do, consider that I've already got my money's worth out of it twice. All the talk about the valves being defective.....see opening statement. I power with a 2.5 'zuki and its a little slow, but I'm still buying beer and bikinis for the old lady with the grand I saved over a 6 hp. Besides, appearantly I got back from where I was going with it with no issues. If your the guy that takes 7 of his buddies every where he goes, this boat won't do it. If you have a couple of bikini babes and a quiet cove, well by all means I highly recommend this dinghy. And remember, if somethings gonna happen, it's gonna happen out there.

Have had the boat for a month. Very sturdy design with thick rubber. Folds up and stows a lot better than any hard bottom dinghy.

Comments about West Marine PRU-3 Performance Roll-Up Inflatable Boat:

We purchased this boat after a recall on West's other inflatables where the seams fell apart. It as been used a lot as a tender in the early years at Catalina's Istmas, Cat Harbor, Forth of July, and Santa Barbara Island. To numerous to count harbor cruises and it was kept in a valise, fresh H20 rinsed and treated with 303 after each outing. It finally (after 19 years) had the glue on the bottom seams start to fail this weekend at the dock and we said it's time for its retirement. The chambers are still all sound, but rather than have it refurbed we are looking at a new one. This boat was solid did all we asked, and never abused it therefore it lived as long as it did and looked new the entire time in fact it still looks brand new...

            • Sailboat without davits

Comments about West Marine PRU-3 Performance Roll-Up Inflatable Boat:

Sure, there are better inflatables around, but they cost substantially more and you cannot fold them and store them in a bag on a sailboat deck. You can row this boat, but not too far. A 3 to 4 HP outboard is just about perfect because it will not go on a plane with 2 people in (but will with one). It can comfortably carry 3 people, 4 if the sea is quiet and you are not going too far. The boat is well constructed - at least for the money - and has been very dependable. Really, it is hard to think of a better "value" if one is looking for an inflatable to keep on a sailboat to go to shore in a harbor. You probably don't want to ride it in 2+ ft waves...

Went to look at one at the store. Very very thin. Possibly ok if a beach wasn't involved. Not at all like the low end rib wm had next to it. Write up says they're made from same material. Not a chance
