Scamper II Inflatable Tandem Sit-Inside Kayak

A tandem kayak that only weighs 31 pounds? That's insane!

Our Scamper II Inflatable Tandem Sit-Inside Kayak weighs less than an average Western horse saddle. And will get you across the lake a lot quicker we might add. Where can you take this kayak? Well...like anywhere! Without the need for a roof rack, a truck or a membership to a gym. In fact, if you can get you to navigable water, you can get this kayak there as well. But enough about weight. How does it perform? When properly inflated it is stable yet maneuverable. Straight tracking in flat water yet cuts easily through small surf. Performance comparable to those hard-to-store, hard-to-transport and (not to mention) relatively heavy rigid shell kayaks. Also a better option if you live in an apartment and don't want a 12-foot-long orange plastic monstrosity (her word not mine) sitting in your hallway.

Easy To Set Up

It doesn't get much easier than this. Unfold it, inflate it, attach the seat, start paddling. It deflates and folds back up for storage just as easily. We've even included a foot pump.

Hull Design

Made from three-layer, heavy-duty PVC tarpaulin with RF (radio frequency) welded seams that provide a consistent air tight seal, our kayak features rigid bow and stern forms and a tracking fin to improve performance and help keep you on course. We've placed a high denier polyester laminate topside over a bottom that combines two sheets of PVC with a fabric mesh, plus a landing plate for increased durability. Abrasion pads are added in high use areas for years of trouble-free paddling.

Cockpit

The seating compartment is encircled by air chambers for increased stability. The Scamper II accommodates one or two paddlers with two supportive, high-back, adjustable padded seats that can be set up (as shown in the above pictures) with one seat centered in the cockpit for better weight distribution and the other seat removed or both positioned for tandem use. The foam floor provides insulation between you and the cold water below for extra comfort.

Deck

The forward deck lacing and mesh accessory pocket are great places to stash items you need access to quickly. You'll also find comfortable carrying handles at the bow and stern to help tote it down to the water or to make those unplanned portages easier.

If you don't already own them or it's time to replace the ones you have, remember to order kayak paddles and life jackets (both sold separately) so you'll be ready to splash your kayak as soon as possible!

When inflated properly, this kayak is fine, within the limits of what you expect from an inflatable. But it is very easy to under / over inflate - there is no pressure guage with the supplied pump - and if under-inflated it bows and sags, if over-inflated it becomes lopsided.

Comments about West Marine Scamper II Inflatable Tandem Sit-Inside Kayak:

It's fun after you take the time to pump it up and attach all the parts. But the clean up is extreme time consuming. You have to wipe down all the nooks and crannys. It won't air dry in between the folds like a hard kayak. It bends in the middle if you have two people carrying it from the ends. And the weight limit is not very much at 330lbs. But if you only go once in a while and storage space is a concern, then it's not a bad deal.

Comments about West Marine Scamper II Inflatable Tandem Sit-Inside Kayak:

I owned the prior model West Marine yellow inflatable, which is dying after several years of use. This Scamper II is a greatly improved model. It inflates and deflates quickly and easily with the little foot pump provided, just be sure to pump it up as instructed until it is hard. It tracks well, and it is spacious and comfortable. I have had it for two months, used it frequently, and left it in the hot summer sun when not in use. But when I leave it, I partially deflate it so as not to stretch the chambers when they get hot under the sun. It takes 5 seconds. To inflate it again takes less than a minute. Great inflatable! I use it on a lake with calm water.

Comments about West Marine Scamper II Inflatable Tandem Sit-Inside Kayak:

I took up kayaking a few months ago and decided to invest in an inflatible because rental fees were adding up. I don't have much upper body stregth to wrestle a tandem hardshell on/off my vehicle nor the space in my home for storage. After much research I took the plunge and purchased this item from West Marine, mainly because they had the product at the store and I didn't have to wait for delivery and also because the kayak is made by Advanced Elements which has a good reputation for making decent inflatible kayaks.I've only owed this product for about a week but have already taken it out three times. Twice on choppy Tampa Bay waters, and lastly I paddled for 4 hours at a local spring. This craft is best on calm waters, it feels very sturdy and rigid, tracks surpringly well even better than some of the hardshell rentals and is very responsive when turning and back paddling. Back support could be improved, I place a waterproof cushion on my back and i was comfortable. The included foot air pump is a joke, I bought an inexpensive double action hand pump, and was able to pump and go in about 10 minutes. Deflating takes a few minutes, I spray it down while still inflated then deflate and let it dry.Putting it back in the bag is not hard either. So far I am happy with my purchase, it is made from thick and sturdy materials if it holds up for a couple of years I'll be very happy.

I was not expecting much given other reviews.....I bought a demo/refurbish expecting to be disappointed but I was completely impressed. It was not at all difficult to paddle, even went a mile up a river against current and it handled wonderful with my son sitting up front. I am honestly glad someone returned it to give me a chance to take my son out on the water....the person who returned it is missing out!

Comments about West Marine Scamper II Inflatable Tandem Sit-Inside Kayak:

The kayak does not inflate evenly. The bladders don't lay evenly along the sides. Most importantly, even though it says it is rated for 350 pounds it bends like a pretezel when I get in (I am 250+/-). To add insult to injury, the attachable fin didn't stay attached and doesn't float.

Comments about West Marine Scamper II Inflatable Tandem Sit-Inside Kayak:

Had trouble with the Velcro bladder cover popping open if overinflated or in the sun. Manufacturer called me last week and offered a replacement cover with a zipper...BRILLIANT!! Installed this morning and been paddling around all day. Love the boat!! Such a simple fix to end 2 years of frustrations! Don't buy without the zippered cover

            Scamper II problems

Comments about West Marine Scamper II Inflatable Tandem Sit-Inside Kayak:

Have had the kayak for about 2 years. Frustrating to get the pressure perfect...if not enough then sags, if too much the Velcro seams that hold the bladder rip open and bladder pops out. If too hot the seams pop open, if too cool sag, if leave in the sun even a short time, pop. Once popped, you have to run for shore, deflate, reclose the velcro seams on a beach, hope to get pressure perfect...frustrating. Seems odd to require such an exact pressure by manufacturer yet provide no way to determine the exact pressure? Bladders should be zippered vs velcro. Disappointed, probably should have returned it when I could.

Spent a week cruising around Lake Tahoe and the Truckee River with my kids on the Scamper II. After you get it fully inflated (which isn't easy w/ the included foot pump), it's VERY rigid and fast. It did a fair job cutting through the chop on a windy day in Tahoe while paddling from Emerald Bay to DL Bliss SP.
