I needed a basic VHF radio for coastal cruising & compared features with similarly priced radios available on line. (This product seems to be made for West Marine by Uniden) the radio was on sale, so I bought it for four reasons: 1, the compact size; 2, it was available; 3, the West Marine return policy; and, the price.
After installing the radio, the sound quality of the small speakers surprised me. It's a food value at the price.

Bought this product 3 seasons ago. I typically keep my boat in storage in the south, so there's not a lot of harsh weather and the radio only gets wet when I wash the boat. This year, I turned the radio on and realized it needs to be replaced. Speaker doesn't work anymore.

If you decide to buy this unit, realize that it does have a MMEI or some type of coastguard tracker. I wish I could have either disabled it, so it would keep popping up every time I turned the unit on. I use the VHF for marina calls or occasional weather reports. Your situation might be different, but if so, I'd recommend a better (more dependable unit).

Waterproof Rating: IPX4 (That is quite a low rating)

By Big Al

Comments about West Marine VHF480 Fixed VHF Radio—White:

For a small boat with possible water intrusion you should have a IPX7 or an IPX8 waterproof rating.
Both of those ratings are good for immersion in water. The IPX7 for a short time and the IPX8 for an extended period of time. For a few bucks more get a radio with the higher rating.

Very poor VHF!

By West End Bahamas Boater

from West End, Grand Bahama

Comments about West Marine VHF480 Fixed VHF Radio—White:

This was by far the worst VHF radio anyone could by. The radio cannot take the extreme heat or salt water well. The two knobs rusted and finally fell off...then the radio says battery low after a few minutes of being turned on...and beeps constantly. I will not buy the West Marine Brand ever again and will not recommend this to anyone.

VHF Fail

By Not Happy

from Ventura CA

Comments about West Marine VHF480 Fixed VHF Radio—White:

Purchased 6 years ago but not used much as boat was getting restored.
Runs fine for about 30 secs then fades out and stops receiving or transmitting.
Total usage time is less than 200 hrs.
