G/flex 650 is a toughened, versatile, liquid epoxy resin for permanent  bonding of fiberglass, ceramics, metals, plastics, damp and difficult-to-bond woods. With a modulus of elasticity of 150,000 PSI, it is a bit more flexible than standard epoxies and polyester, but much stiffer than adhesive sealants. This gives G/flex 650 the ability to make structural bonds that can absorb the stress of expansion, contraction, shock and vibration. It is ideal for bonding dissimilar materials. It can be modified with WEST SYSTEM fillers and additives, and used to wet-out fiberglass tapes and fabrics. Mixed at a 1:1 ratio, G/flex 650 gives you 75 minutes of working time at room temperature. It reaches an initial cure in 7 to 10 hrs and full cure in 24 hrs. 650 G/flex Resins should be paired with comparable size 650 G/flex Hardeners. Includes 4 ounces of resin and 4 ounces of hardener.

Perfect epoxy

By Bob Z

from Needham, MA

Pros

  • Adheres To Any Surface
  • stays in place

Cons

  • Slow Curing In Cold Temps

Best Uses

  • Waterproof Repairs

Comments about West System G/flex 650-8 Liquid Epoxy, Resin and Hardener:

With a consistency of molasses, I was able to brush this epoxy into small crevices in a cracked 4" cast iron drain pipe. Once hardened, the epoxy completely sealed the crack. The epoxy was the perfect solution, as the crack probably had some moisture inside. Have observed the repair for over a month and there is no sign of any leaks. Because of the epoxy's strength, I'm sure the pipe is stronger than new. Sorry it wasn't a boat repair, but this little 650 kit saved me around $4000 in plumbing repairs.

Old standby

Comments about West System G/flex 650-8 Liquid Epoxy, Resin and Hardener:

This has been my old standard epoxy for binding wood, covering wood and leather and binding all of the above, along with covering metal implants. It is rather thick and not runny. When applied, it can be re-shaped and re-distributed for up to about 40 minutes. When it hardens, it is smooth and relatively clear. However, it has a yellow tint, especially the newer formulas which have a darkened hardener.. This epoxy is very strong and lasts for years. It's the one I fall back on even though I also use the fast-dry and the 105-209 mixture for very clear surfaces. The latter is runny when applied and much thinner than the Gflex. I use the epoxy in making walking canes, small wood fixtures, tables and the like.

Comments about West System G/flex 650-8 Liquid Epoxy, Resin and Hardener:

I have a Goat Island Skiff - a 15.5 foot all wood Michael Storer sailing skiff. I used G-flex for adding fiberglass to the end of my mast, coating the ends of my new boom, repairing dings on my rails or centerboard. It's easy to mix a very small quantity for small repairs, so no wastage, and the consistency is just right, not too thick that it won't soak fiberglass, or too thin that you can't control where it goes.

Comments about West System G/flex 650-8 Liquid Epoxy, Resin and Hardener:

I bought this at West Marine. I recommend getting the larger kit with 16 oz bottles as it has long shelf life. Mixes 1:1. When I need it thicker, I use West 406 silica. Also I wear a 3M NIOSH vapor mask, chemical goggles and nitrile gloves when I work with these materials due to hazards. Sand area and clean with acetone to prep. I venture to say that this is the BEST all-around epoxy for the boater, and you will find uses for it around the home shop. Great stuff! Highly recommended. The ultimate ductape/bailing wire high-tech replacement. -Paul Chaplo
