Learn MoreDe-icers protect boats against ice damage.
Boats that are kept in the water during the winter can be damaged by ice. In the colder parts of the country, boats are hauled out of the water during the winter to protect from ice damage. However, many parts of the country that only have modest amounts of ice on the water can use a de-icer (aka a water circulator) to create a non-freezing area around the boat. A side benefit of de-icers is that they can help to keep boat slips free of marine growth and debris during summer months.
How do de-icers prevent ice formation?
De-icers are small electric motors with propellers attached, which are suspended in the water under or adjacent to boats. By moving slightly warmer water from underneath the boat up to the surface, ice formation can be almost completely eliminated. This also prevents ice damage to docks and pilings.
How are de-icers controlled?
Thermostats are used to turn on de-icers when the temperature drops to the point when ice might form. This saves on electricity by not having the device operating all the time.
How are de-icers installed?
De-icers can be suspended using line, with a De-Icer Horizontal Flotation kit, or attached to a dock with a De-Icer Dock Mount. The dock mount requires a length of galvanized pipe to locate the motor unit under the boat. You have to supply the 1” pipe. 12V and 120V de-icers are offered.
Sizes of De-Icers
West Marine offers four sizes of de-icers. De-icers are offered with 1/2, 3/4 or 1 hp motors. The smallest model will keep a 50’ diameter area ice-free, while the 3/4 hp model will keep a 75’ diameter area ice-free.
