I had 3 nice sized gashes in front bow of my new boat. It knocked the gel coat off but the fiberglass and glue underneath were luckily ok. The tricky part was the chips were under the bow of the boat so the good news was the area would not see much water but it was hard to get to since I had to apply from underneath. I took the advice of an early review and put it on layer by layer. I put on thin layers and did not worry about filling in the entire gash at once and put it on in layers. after 3 layers it turned out pretty good and after wet sanding, it was almost perfect.

I had one gash the area of a half dollar and 2 chips the size of a coin slot in a coke machine. I was surprised how well the big gash filled in and was pleased how easy it was. I would suggest a fine grit sandpaper. the finer the grip and the more time you spend on sanding and buffing the better.

it has the consistency of glue so was you are putting it on it adheres to pretty well so worry about spreading it completely to all the nooks and crannies first and then build off it.

Used this to repair a REALLY big chunk that had been taken off by the previous owner when he dropped and anchor on the deck of a 21ft center console. The chunk was about the size of a 1/2 dollar and down to the base material.

I had tried to use this as directed but scraping it proved impossible, it would just pull most of the material right out. Having a background in automotive body work, I decided to try to add a small amount, let it cure (about a day) and add more, let it cure, etc. and build up the repair area. Worked like a charm. Built it up, took some 400 grit, sanded it down, took some 1000 grit, leveled it out, took some 2000 grit, started to polish it, some automotive buffing compound and a polish later, it looks pretty decent.

5 stars for decent price. 1 star for making me figure out the best way to use it and not having good directions on the package.

Comments about Gel Coat Scratch Patch:

Used this for a small break on a corner piece. I was told by WM that I could apply in layers and that it would be fine. I used in a hot afternoon, and takes too long to fill in and flows down on vertical repairs. I tried using a tape to create a dam, but after 12 hours, the gel did not harden and had to remove some. I expected something that would harden no matter what after applied and that I would have to shape and sand as needed. It was not the case. And the price at about $16 for such a small container is excessive. Unless you have a very shallow gel coat repair, mostly flat, I would use something else.

Comments about Gel Coat Scratch Patch:

I had not one chip in the deck and two on the gunwale - all from folks dropping 16 ounce lead weights when bottom fishing. I wanted a quick/easy fix. Went to West Marine and purchased a tube of this product. Was too easy - cleaned the chip area with acetone, squeezed the product into the chip holes - covered with a piece of blue tape. Next morning I peeled the tape off and couldn't hardly tell where the chips were. Loaded up the boat and went fishing.

Comments about Gel Coat Scratch Patch:

I had several 1/2 dollar and dime sized gouges in my gelcoat in the cockpit of my sailboat. First off you have to mix it as it comes out of the tube as its not consistent. Once mixed it acts like an epoxy. I used my Dremmel drill to clean the gouge and fair the edges for better adhesion. I applied the gelcoat patch a bit at a time as others have suggested. It took three layers to fill in the damamged areas and mound the gelcoat. Once dried it sanded down well and when compounded and waxed it was almost perfect! Buy WHITE if your gelcoat is WHITE. The BUFF WHITE comes off more like a light tan color. The stuff works fine but takes patience for an excellent repair job.
