Fixed Shank Scoop Anchors
Shop Fixed Shank Scoop Anchors at West Marine
If you are looking for a type of anchor for general anchoring purposes where the bottom or "holding ground" is comprised of sand, rocks, weeds or mud, we suggest you consider fixed shank scoop style anchors. West Marine offers these anchors from several manufacturers, including Rocna, Mantus and Spade.
Common Features
All of these anchors feature a narrow shank profile and "chiseled" tips which enables deep bottom penetration. Wide flukes result in excellent holding power, and all lend themselves to mounting on a bow roller from which they are easy to deploy.
Unique Features
Notable differences between these anchors include the addition of a roll bar on some models whose purpose is to make the anchor self-righting and easily reset when needed. Anchors with roll bars include models by Rocna and Mantus.
Other variations include Spade’s Stainless Steel Anchor, which uses a ballast chamber in the anchor tip filled with lead, to increase weight at the tip. This additional ballast is used both to aid in proper orientation once on the seabed and in penetrating the bottom during setting. This ballast eliminates the need for a roll bar.
Another anchor worth mentioning is Rocna’s Fisherman’s Anchor. In addition to having a roll bar, this anchor offers two modes of use: "retrievable" and "secure". This is accomplished by Rocna’s addition of a shackle rail to the shank. In retrievable mode, the shackle rail allows you to retrieve the anchor from the opposite direction if it becomes fouled, but is not to be used for overnight or unattended anchoring. While in secure mode, a secure attachment point is used for overnight or unattended anchoring.
