Comments about Transom Mounting Extension Shim:

I installed this product about a year ago for use in scuba diving in salt water. It has a breakaway plastic rod feature that permits the ladder to flip up if you accidentally move the boat with the ladder down. Once this happens you will have to replace the broken plastic rod with a new one so keep spares handy on the boat. I had my first breakaway situation and caught the problem within seconds after the breakaway occurred. The major problem was that the thin ladder release slider bent and WOULD NOT RELEASE THE LADDER AND IT WAS STUCK TO THE HOUSING . After about an hour trying to release the clip (in a rocking boat) I just gave up and tried to unbolt the entire mechanism, again while the boat was rocking. The lock nut on this bolt came off will some effort but bolt was seized by salt corrosion into the housing in a very difficult location to punch through. After about another hour (and bleeding knuckles), I got the bolt punched thru with a Phillips screwdriver. I took the entire ladder (still connected to release mechanism) home and was finally able to break the ladder release clip free. What had happened is the the slot in the middle of the thin release clip had (due to water pressure on the ladder) compressed the slot too thin making it impossible to pull the clip free to release the ladder. Moreover, I could not open the release housing to get at the clip because all 4 of the Allen wrench bolts were seized due to corrosion. The bottom line is it seems like this release mechanism is a good idea that does not really work in actual practice, particularly in salt water. The attached picture shows the the release slider on the top after I got it free using a bench vise and widen the slot back to normal with a flat head screwdriver. The Allen bolts pictured are still seized.

Comments about Transom Mounting Extension Shim:

I have a 19' Ranger Flats 184, and while I do not need a ladder to get in the boat, sometimes I have passengers who do need a ladder. The transom is such that a swim platform would not fit properly with the trim tabs and poling platform that I have. I bought a garelick ladder, but I was still having trouble with placing the ladder because of the trim tabs. I bought the 3" shim featured here, and it extends the ladder away plenty far enough to clear the trim tabs. I probably could have gotten by with the 2" now that I see how far out the clearance is with the 3", but I guess it is nice to have plenty of clearance. This extension shim solved my problems.
