Stainless-Steel Marine Water Heaters

Designed specifically for marine use, the innovative design of these water heaters represents a welcome departure from traditional upright cylinders and box-like designs of the past. Inner and outer tanks are made of 316 stainless steel, NOT corrosion-prone aluminum. These heaters may be mounted vertically or horizontally and are secured by adjustable stainless steel mounting feet.

Engine water heat exchanger coils are extra long for faster heating and AC heating elements are nickel-coated copper for long life. All models feature polyurethane foam insulation for extra heat retention and incorporate service thermostats set to 160°F. Thermostatically controlled mixing valves prevent scalding, and ensure that water reaches the tap at the temperature you wish. Additional sizes and options available by special order.

  • Material: Storage tank and connections: 316 stainless steel; electric heating coil: nickel-plated copper; cover and mounting feet: 304 stainless steel
  • Port Sizes: All plumbing fittings are 1/2" NPT, including freshwater and heat exchanger inlets and outlets
  • Draw: 6.8A @ 120V AC
  • Warranty: One year on labor; two years parts; five-year limited on inner tank

Comments about Stainless Steel Marine Water Heaters:

The Basic 30 (tubular-shaped tank) sits solidly, off the floor for the most part, on its own steel feet, and unlike a cube heater, it lets me use any space around it, afforded by its roundness, It takes a few inches more in one dimension than the same size cube , so measure carefully. My BAsic 30 repalces a 11 gallon cube heater, which didn't have room to spare. I moved stuff around a little, and still found room for an expansion tank and pump. I hooked all the FW plumbing in the water bay with PEX. Ran the silicone engine coolant hoses to the water heater's 2 X 1/2" connections.

I have a LPG-fueled boiler that provides hydronic space heating--it has a loop through the heat exchanger, so it can heat hot water like the engine does. But it needs a therrmostat to tell it when the water is hot, so the boiler doesn't run on and on once the domestic water is hot. The Basic 30 doesn't seem to have a ready way to hook an external thermostat for the LPG boiler. I'll think of something to make it work, but this would be a capability worth describing in the Basic 30 installation instructions. Nothing there about using an external thermostat, currently, though it has the heat exchanger.

Note that in the past, the Basic 30's mixing valve had male British Standard Parallel threads, requiring an adapter and thread sealantto go to NPT hardware, so i had that stuff on hand for the install, but didn;t need it--all Basic 30 pipe/hose connections, including the mixing valve outlet, are now 1/2" standard NPT (pipe thread). I used sealant on them all anyway.

I took the 750 Watt option for the electric heater (mfr offers 1500 W option), as it will run off 120V shore, gen, OR INVERTER/golf cart batts, and the batts can produce the 750 Watts easily. Wouldn't want to draw 1500 Watts for hot water, I'm not in that big a hurry for it, and the big draw leads to over-heated batt plates.

It has been making hot water like a champ for a week now. I gave it 5 stars in this review--it has been a simple install and flawless first week. I should de-rate it to 4 stars for not anticipating the external thermostat thing I mentioned, but anyway after the easy install and one week of making hot water, I have that 5-star feeling from it. Ask me how many stars again in a year or two, that's when my rating will start to show whether it was a good component for my vessel.

My vessel is an all-steel Wanderlodge motorcoach. I'm looking forward to many years from the Basic 30, too.

Service and delivery comments:

Delivery took an extra day. I ordered it in the wee hours of the morning, paying a little extra for Next Day. Apparently the back office likes to double-check big orders and held mine until too late to get it out to me on time. I've asked for a refund of the Next Day charges. Had to ask twice, but have been told it will be refunded.

Otherwise, ordering online was a smooth and easy process, no glitches in payment, no misunderstandings about delivery and billing addresses, a real 21st Century experience. Cheers.
