LEWMAR D2 Rope Clutches

Allows controlled release under load

The award winning D2 Rope Clutch allows for an easy and controlled release even at full holding power. Instead of just jamming the rope, the D2 clutch’s Domino Cluster mechanism has a longer holding pattern for better grip and less rope wear. Full holding power is retained regardless of line type used, holding equally well on conventional double braids or Dyneema, Vectran and other modern lines. Fits line sizes from 5/16" (8mm) to 9/16" (14mm). Due to its variable geometry handle and the grip pattern of its dominoes, the D2 provides easy, controlled releases under load without fraying your lines. Aluminum handles and all-metal cam mechanisms.

Used for singlehanded offshore sailing (including Singlehanded Transpac) for 5 years. Replaced them twice in that time as they allow halyard slippage when using 5/16 line. They are rebuit easily, usually it is a spring problem. Customer service from Lewmar has been unresponsive on two occasions. About to try there spares kit, but cannnot find a listing of what the kit contains. I would switch but redoing my deck paint and non-skid for another brand is more trouble than replacing the clutch.

Replaced older factory installed clutches using same holes, quickly. Clutch mecanism works as advertised.

Comments about Lewmar Single, 5/16" - 3/8" Line Dia., 22.8oz:

I installed the D2 Clutch a few weeks ago. Installation was a breeze, although I did have to drill new holes for it. This was a lot easier than I expected, as the D2 allows for a decent amount of play in where the bolts are located.

Nuts, bolts and washers are not supplied.

The instructions are minimal, some more information on feeding the line would have been helpful. What is provided is a small pamphlet which has all necessary information for installation.

This clutch feels solid with no hangups while feeding and no play when under load. I am using 3/8" nylon and am very happy with the results.
