I had a twenty something pound bruce/ claw suddenly pull out of a muddy, grassy bottom in a really severe squall. Boat then dragged it and thirty feet of chain like it was nothing until she fetched up on the other hook, a barnacle anchor, that is no longer made. Boat was 22ft venture.
On retrieval, the claw anchor was found to have a nice ball of stiff, grassy mud held neatly in the curved up fluke. No way it was going to reset, ever. I do not like them for rocky bottoms either. Had the best luck in clean, soft sand. I have also used really big, 60lb plus, claws as permanent moorings with success. The weight helps them and they are more affordable in larger sizes then other anchors. I would not trust the smaller sizes for my area (Keys)

Comments about High-Tensile Steel Claw Anchors:

I bought the 4lb. anchor for my small boat as the price was right and I wanted something lighter in weight than my home fabricated FOB Design Anchor. However, I used it on a sandy and grassy bottom at Lake Silverwood, California in a light breeze. It hooked up once and pulled up a giant chunk of grass, roots, and mud. I tried setting it for a half hour even in an area with just sand and it pulled out every time. I finally deployed my FOB and it set the first time. I have decided to give this anchor another chance and shackled some heavy chain across the back of it and zip tied it to the front attachment hole in case it gets stuck. If it works I will update my review accordingly. As of right now I would get a Danforth Design anchor and be done with it.

I use this tiny anchor around sandy bottom only. It does a good job for my 22' cruiser. It's small, light and practical. Every boat should have one of these as an extra.

I purchased the 10kg size for my 28ft heavy displacement sail boat and cannot be more pleased after 10 years of anchoring around the Channel Islands of California. It is inexpensive, reliable, and once set, it stays set. My only complaint is the stowing and handling is a bit clumsy due to the shape.

That said, I then purchased a 1kg version for my inflatable hoping for a similar experience. Unfortunately, it will not hold anything under any condition in any bottom unless you find a rock to snag it. I even tried it in the soft dirt of my recently dug garden, at zero angle of scope, and all it will do is plow a nice furrow but never even tries to dig. The 1kg version is worthless.
