MERCURY MARINE
8hp & 9.9hp 4-Stroke Outboards

Mercury Marine’s 4-stroke technology consumes 40% less fuel than 2-stroke models for extraordinary value and savings.

Engines surpass California Air Resources Board (CARB) 3-Star Rating, making them some of the cleanest running on the market-with 91% less emissions than traditional 2-stroke outboards!

The inherent 4-stroke characteristics of ultra-quiet, smoke-free operation, plus smooth idling and running make these engines a natural choice whether you’re trolling for fish or out just for fun. Clean running 4-stroke engines from 2.5 to 20hp have a CARB three-star, ultra-low emissions rating. The decompression system and electronic CD ignition design ensure an easy, reliable start. One-stage over-rev protection and low oil pressure warning system provide extra peace of mind. Exclusive multifunction tiller handle on the 8hp and 9.9hp models features shift, steering, throttle, throttle friction, and stop controls for convenient one-hand operation. Available in manual-tilt, gas-assist and power-trim. All models are sold with a propeller.

You must put the correct amount and grade of oil in the crankcase prior to the first use or you will cause extensive damage to your engine, which is not covered by your engine’s warranty. Comments about 8hp & 9.9hp 4-Stroke Outboards:

This is the worst purchase I have ever made. Picked up on Thursday motor ran good. Friday hard to start. Saturday won't start at all, not even a sputter. Used it less than 2 hours and it has been at Mercury dealer for a week. When I called West Marine on Saturday they said "oh you will need to take it to a service dealer, we can't do anything". West Marine does not stand behind any of their products. If you need a motor go to a service providing dealer. This really has ruined a great customer, West Marine is now my last choice.

              Comments about 8hp & 9.9hp 4-Stroke Outboards:

Purchased this motor for use in our marine business. We needed something compact, reliable and fuel efficient to power one of our mobile repair boats- this small vessel puts on alot of miles and often bangs through rough seas. It needs to be there for our customers- we can't be regularly breaking down ourselves and not showing up.
This small Merc is powerful enough and, being so new, is reliable enough...so far. My work partner, used to a separate shift control, finds the Merc's throttle-shifter combo to be awkward. It's difficult to find neutral gear at lower speeds. A duplicate Merc 8 that a friend owns is experiencing similar difficulties and at one point got stuck in reverse gear.
Our Merc 8 is almost three months old and has been nice to use overall, but a factory defect is causing problems; fuel is getting into the oil. As a marine mechanic, I know the cause, but to honor the warranty, I have to find help from the dealer.
Not only do I rely on this motor to earn a living, but it's how I safely get home on a daily basis. (I live along an island chain & have to travel by boat)

              Service and delivery comments:

The store had one in stock. Friendly, helpful service, as usual with our local West Marine stores. I'll be seeking help from cust. service soon, but am afraid of how long it will take & will the motor have to be shipped somewhere for who knows how long (when I really need the Merc. to run my business and get home every day!)

Use it to ferry people and supplies to and from my boat on a mooring. Bought it for the 2011 Boating Season and have found it completely reliable and rugged. Snagged the prop twice on garbage and a stray line- with no damage to the unit. Have more than enough power to deal with a max loaded boat. Whisper quiet!

              Comments about 8hp & 9.9hp 4-Stroke Outboards:

I use this on my corsair 31 trimaran. I get 6.5 knots at just over half throttle and only .25-.5 knots more at full throttle. My boat is light and this motor has so much thrust that half throttle is all I need. It is also very handy having forward and reverse in tiller handle no turning around when heading into slip. The only down side is it may be a touch louder than the honda 9.9 high thrust I had before, however I cannot swear to that.
