PENN
Mariner Boat Rods

The Mariner Series, Stand up style and Boat rods, are unique among solid glass rods. The tapers are comparable to more expensive tubular blanks, but miraculously without breakage issues. Lighter than other glass-blank rods, the Mariner is a trusty choice for either style angler.

Comments about Mariner Boat Rods:

I bought two, may add more. When paired with big Penn reels, 4/0 or Long Beach 67 or 68, it can be cast well with 4 oz weight. Best for boat, bottom and jigging. I fought 100 lb+ fish with it a few times, the solid fiber glass blank held like a stand up rod. But for small fish, i.e. 2 lb, it is too stiff to feel the bites. On a crowded boat when someone step on it, it won't break, but the hollow graphite rods would be crushed.

    Comments about Mariner Boat Rods:

This is the first Penn Mariner boat rod (6'-6", 20-50 lb, conventional) which I own. I mounted a Penn Long Beach #67 (4/0) reel with 50 lb mono and 4 oz weight. It casts very well, over 50 yards easily even it's a little stiff. It's good for jigging, bottom and trolling in open water. The 5-guide system made it easy casting but may not be enough when fighting 100 Lb plus tuna, shark, bat ray or giant black sea bass. I have not encountered any very big fish on this rod yet, I hope it will hold with just 5 guides. If it were 7 guides, then it would be perfect.

      Comments about Mariner Boat Rods:

Mariner "boat rods" are TERRIBLE when used as a boat rod, and Penn should be ashamed of having their name on them. Mine literally fell apart after a single day of use, therefore I can't recommend that anyone spend their money on them. West Marine stood behind the product and offered me replacement or refund. I opted to spend more money on better quality rods. These were a real disappointment. I have no issue with West Marine, but Penn's quality control on these is just non-existent.
