Comments about WM3000RF Marine Stereo with Radio Frequency (RF) and Infrared (IR) Remotes:

I purchased two of these units. One for the cabin and one for the cockpit. I only installed the rf remote sensor on the cockpit unit as this radio powers the speakers facing the beach. Almost immediately the rf remote stopped working if we were more than ten feet away. I relocated the rf reciever so it would have alomost line of site which I should not need for a rf remote and it improved minimally. This unit also has a problem with the display going out. My second unit in the cabin has a problem with the volume knob falling off and needs to be replaced as well. Both of these units are under one year old and I have the extended warranty so I am covered but now they both have to be removed for repair/replacement. I would suggest that West Marine do more extensive testing on hardware that they put their brand name on.

Comments about WM3000RF Marine Stereo with Radio Frequency (RF) and Infrared (IR) Remotes:

This initially was a good buy, but when I ran into the problem of the RF receiver killing the battery, I connected it to an on/off switch on the same circuit as the stereo. That's when I started having problems with the RF remote. Jim from Michigan commented that it should not be connected this way(did not give a reason), but the manual says that it is ok. I'm going to re-connect it separately as before and see if it solves the problem with the RF remote. If it solves the problem, I'll notify West Marine and re-post a comment to that effect.

Comments about WM3000RF Marine Stereo with Radio Frequency (RF) and Infrared (IR) Remotes:

I wanted the RF remote to adjust volume from the cockpit. I can, but only if the remote is in front of the companionway opening.

Installation of the RF remote was not well thought out.
      1. It must be separately connector to power rather than having the power delivered through the cable from the stereo. An un-necessary pain.
      2. The leads are so short (like 10 inches) it's impossible to mount the RF receiver as described in the manual. In fact it's impossible to mount it at all - the lead is barely long enough to reach through the opening to plug into the back before sliding the unit into place.

      3. Hardware provided is not stainless, but not a big deal since you can't mount it anyway. Just another example of "marine" not really being marine.

      4. The unit is wrapped in some kind of tape like material ("marinized"?), so the ventilation holes in the top are covered. This might make it "splash resistant", but it seems to run hot even when not turned on. Better get the extended warranty.

The West Marine radio was easy to install and sounds great! The only con is that the volume turner nob isn't to durable and mine already broke after maybe 15 days of use. Ill see maybe i can get it replaced but otherwise amazing and highly recommend.

purchased this radio to replace the original equipment Clarion M5170 that came with my 1997 SeaRay 270 Sundancer. It was a perfect fit, no cutting required. The directions made the install very simple and I had it working in about an hour. Everything works great but my original equipment 1997 speakers may need an update now. I priced radios similar to this for much more. We really like the RF remote because the radio is mounted in the cabin. I would recommend this radio to anyone looking to update

Good stereo with convenient speakers. The dual remotes are especially cool. Hooking up and iPod is easy through a 1.5 mm jack or a USB cable. Installation was straightforward. I recommend this product.

Comments about WM3000RF Marine Stereo with Radio Frequency (RF) and Infrared (IR) Remotes:

                      Functionality – 4 stars
Remotes are a great feature and work well. Plays a wide variety of CDs/SD/USB with no issues. Would be helpful to list folder names as playing random through certain folders is a challenge. It also requires "always on" power in order to keep mundane settings such as bass/treble/balance/etc. For my install, that is not feasible.

                      Build Quality – 2 stars
Component build seems "light", volume knob is very loose and I feel it will fall off after a short period. The connector-wires appear to be 18-gauge and extremely light compared to the 10yr old unit it replaced. Would be careful mounting this anywhere it might be brushed up against.

                      Sound Quality – 4 stars
No complaints, and comparable to the 10yr old Jensen it replaced (but not significantly better).

                      Install – 2 stars
The mounting sleeve is very short (probably about ¼ the depth of the unit) and is so snug against the unit it does not suit itself to custom mounting requirements (i.e. – you cannot attach screws/nuts to the side of the sleeve. I ended up using the full-sleeve din from my older Jensen (required some customized metal work).

The remote control(s) make this radio stand out in value. The operation and controls are as good as or better than any of the other makes I looked at. Being able to control the sound from anywhere around boat is fantastic. Fishing off the bow, relaxing at the stern, even off the boat at the beach. Very happy with my decision. Great support from WM as well!
