I got a call from the marina that my 30' sailboat was sinking. The rule float switch (new design) had failed for the fourth time this year. Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice, you're obviously picking on the right guy. Stay away from this switch. The rule mercury float switch ran well for many years.

        Comments about Rule-A-Matic Float Switch:

Failed after a month. Came to my boat one day to find the bilge pump running continuously, albeit very slowly. Assumed most of the charge had been depleted but the batteries were fine. Turns out the "off" position of the switch was providing a few ohms resistance, hence the slower speed.

Went back to store to replace it with same switch but brought along multimeter. Package is frustration-free and leads exposed so was able to easily test unit right in the store. Ohm meter should essentially be off-scale/infinite in the switches off position, but to my surprise I was getting a reading of a few hundred ohms. So tried two more that were on the shelf - same thing! Seriously, it's an on/off switch - how hard could that be? I need an on/off switch, not an on/slow switch.

I never had problem with Rule pumps, but this Rule switch is bad. Instead, bought the West Marine Float Switch with the rolling ball mechanism (Model # 13997945). Checked that with meter too and off was infinite as expected.

Comments about Rule Industries Rule-A-Matic Float Switch:

The last one I replaced in September didn't shut off and burned the bilge pump up. It was in for 2 years. Lucky boat was on strong lift or it might have sunk. The one I took out today did same thing , would not shut off. Fortunately I was on boat at time so I disconnected it before a repeat of the last one. Their web page has a very lot to be desired as for getting warranty replacement. What junk! Won't put out money for another.

Switch stuck on "on" and then failed completely after only a little over a month of regular use! I opened the "sealed" case and it was full of bilge water! Contacts were rusty and the switch shaft itself was sticking. Too bad for an ITT owned company. DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT!

Comments about Rule Industries Rule-A-Matic Float Switch:

I've been using this switch in a variety of boats over the years, and I can say it is consistent in one way - It lasts about a year and then fails. Sadly, the old mercury switches were far better.

Fortunately, replacement is easy, despite getting down into the grimy bilge, but now it's an annual event. Of course, it always fails at the most inconvenient times...
