I got a call from the marina that my 30' sailboat was sinking. The rule float switch (new design) had failed for the fourth time this year. Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice, you're obviously picking on the right guy. Stay away from this switch. The rule mercury float switch ran well for many years.

plastic lightweight every 2 yrs you would do well to just replace and be done with it. It would have been so easy to make a durable design with a no fail lift

This is the second switch I had to install in my forward shower sump in little more than a year. One would think the product would be a little more reliable as that shower is not used very often.

I buy a replacement every 6 months. Thank goodness for the 2 year warranty. I wish they would just make this product better. I notice that West Marine is producing one now and I might change out next time.

              Comments about Rule-A-Matic Float Switch:

Failed after a month. Came to my boat one day to find the bilge pump running continuously, albeit very slowly. Assumed most of the charge had been depleted but the batteries were fine. Turns out the "off" position of the switch was providing a few ohms resistance, hence the slower speed.

Went back to store to replace it with same switch but brought along multimeter. Package is frustration-free and leads exposed so was able to easily test unit right in the store. Ohm meter should essentially be off-scale/infinite in the switches off position, but to my surprise I was getting a reading of a few hundred ohms. So tried two more that were on the shelf - same thing! Seriously, it's an on/off switch - how hard could that be? I need an on/off switch, not an on/slow switch.

I never had problem with Rule pumps, but this Rule switch is bad. Instead, bought the West Marine Float Switch with the rolling ball mechanism (Model # 13997945). Checked that with meter too and off was infinite as expected.
