It's a little overkill for my boat but at the end of the day it could save your boat from sinking so I'd say get the larger model.

The water sensor switch turns the pump on but does not turn the pump off. After turning on, it will run forever. The only way to stop it is to remove the cage, dry the sensor with a paper towel, wait a minute or two for it to stop, then reinstall.

Comments about Rule-Mate Fully Automatic Bilge Pumps:

Went through two of these in 3 years. In both cases the internal float switch would not shut the pump off and it drained my battery to nothing. The second one I got was a warranty replacement. The new pump didn't fit into the old strainer so I figured that they had done a redesign. Unfortunately I have the same problem this year. Thankfully West Marine will give me full credit towards a different pump.

      Not a reliable product

Comments about Rule-Mate Fully Automatic Bilge Pumps:

Second one in three years. Same issue as everyone else. Pump turns on but will not turn off when bilge is empty. Drains batteries and boat almost sinks. NOT worth the money.

Replaced this last year after the previous one would not shutoff and killed the battery. After 14 months this one only works on manual and my battery is dead.

Problem with sensor, very poor design

Comments about Rule Industries Rule-Mate Fully Automatic Bilge Pumps:

Recently, I just replaced my 3rd one of these in 12 months. I keep installing this same model, because I purchased it at West Marine, each one was covered under warranty, and I was able to swop out for a new one with little hassle. I also assume the manufacture would listen to these reviews, and actually do something about the problem. If you want to pay too much for a pump that will fail, this one is for you.

All three of my pumps suffered the same critical issue. The pump works fine for a while, but eventually will turn on, and not shut off. You then come back to a boat with a dead battery, and a bilge full of water.

          Won't Shut Off-Drains Battery

          About Me Avid Do-It-Yourselfer

Comments about Rule Industries Rule-Mate Fully Automatic Bilge Pumps:

Pumps great when you need it, but unfortunately keeps pumping when the bilge is dry. This pump will not shut off. It has drained and fried the house battery and I had to move the generator battery over to keep the boat afloat. After reading the other reviews I will be replacing this pump tomorrow; NOT with another Rule...

I just bought a relatively new boat with TWO of these Rule-Mate 2000 pumps. Both will not turn off automatically! I have removed them, held them in my hands running, banged them, shook them, etc. Nothing turns them off except removing the auto fuse. Done with RULE forever!

Discharge nipple cracked at the housing, and since I was 1000 miles from the vendor, I repaired it myself by inserting a pvc pipe as a sleeve. Was proud of my repair and the pump until it failed entirely a few weeks later.
