This is a compact bilge pump which solves the awkward dilema of installing a level switch, with the attendant extra wiring, cost & (most important)unreliability. The pump electronics have a built in control which senses load on the pump impeller. Every few minutes the pump runs auotmatically for 1 to 2 seconds. If the sensor maesures load then the pump continues to run until the bilge is pumped dry. At this time the sensor feels the change in load & cuts off the pump.I have had the unit installed for about 1 yr in my basement drain pit as a back-up to my AC house pump. Thus in the event of a power cut during a period of heavy rain my batery driven back up keeps my basement dry. I aim to fit this unit on my 38 ft which has three very truoblesome bige pumps.

I have bought half a dozen of these, they USED to be great. After so many repeted failures, (2 right out of the box), I finally called ITT and complained. They said they had just moved their facility to Mexico and had not noticed any problems yet. They mailed me 6 free units to appologize. One year later all 5 were dead. I have to leave for the holidays and Was going to install the 6th in my boat, some slight tugging on the wires to straiten them out from packaging was all it took to crack the red housing at the top of the pump body.

Every unit has failed differently... some the electronics stop checking for water and the manual circuity works, others the automatic circuity stays on and burns the motor up (fails to turn off), some fill with water in the "sealed" part and some just stop working all together.

I dont think there is another single person who has bought sooooo many of these units over the last 10 years and used them consistently...

...and its with the utmost of certainly that I will never buy one again AND I WOULD WARN ANYONE WHO VALUES THE SAFELY OF THEIR BOAT NOT TO BUY ANY RULE PRODUCTS MADE IN THEIR MEXICO FACTORY BECAUSE OF EXTREME POOR QUALITY STANDARDS!!!

Comments about Rule Industries Automatic 12V Bilge Pumps:

I've had this pump in service for over two years. It works reliably, but there are two things one should consider: 1) The 2.5 minute delay means that water can accumulate for that amount of time before the pump detects it. If water is coming in - that can be a long wait and the water will have gotten a head start before the pump activates. 2) The noise the pump makes every 2.5 minutes when it runs dry for a few seconds may be annoying in some installations.

Comments about Rule Industries Automatic 12V Bilge Pumps:

I have used these pumps for over 20 years. I have a second large pump in case I get a big leak and use this to keep the sump almost dry. They last a couple of years and then fail. The first one I bought had a lifetime warranty but it turns out you only get the terms of the warranty when you try and collect, not the terms in force when you buy. Last time I bought the extended warranty and will try and collect on that tomorrow. If I have to buy another one, I am looking for another solution

This bilge pump is set up to go through a switch which is not what I wanted, and certainly inappropriate for a bilge pump. I had to try to seal up the wire for the switch - hopefully water in my wet bilge will not get into the wire!

I bought this pump as a second bilge pump because of the auto sensor / no float switch feature. It worked fine - came on every 2.5 minutes for the first 2 months, but now it will only work in manual mode.

I installed this pump as a 12 volt back up for my basement 120 volt sump pump. After the power went out, this pump ran for 14 hours straight with no problem keeping the water out of my basement during hurricane Irene. It kept up. I powered it with a 27 frame deep cycle boat battery and got no water when my neighbors all took on between 4 and 8 inches. None had a back up. I will get an 1100 to insure it has the capacity during the worst conditions and keep the 500 as a back up to the back up.
