SIERRA
Permanent Magnet I/O & Inboard Starters

Sierra starters meet SAE or UL standards for ignition protection to prevent explosion. Sierra offers remanufactured and new starters for many applications. Starters are available for standard (left hand) and reverse (right hand) rotation engines. They can be mounted two ways. Front mount starters have the drive gear facing aft and spin opposite of the engine rotation. Rear mount starters have the drive gear facing forward and spin in the same direction as the engine. Low voltage caused by worn out batteries, loose wire connections or corrosion can cause starter and other electrical component failure. Before replacing your starter, make sure to check for voltage problems.

We carry starters for a wide variety of engine applications. Below are some of the most popular models. Call 1-800-BOATING for more specific application information.

Comments about Permanent Magnet I/O & Inboard Starters:

I recently replaced the engines in my boat and I installed new Sierra starters on both engines. The first one failed after 7 starts and the second one failed after 10 starts, I took them to a local marine electrical shop, where I learned that the Sierra starters are cheap Chinese copies of cheap Korean knock-offs of the original Delco starters, and not worth rebuilding. I bought two Delco starters form him. To add insult to injury, the high quality replacements cost me $30 each less than the Sierras I bought from West Marine. Add that to the $600 labor cost for installation in a tight engine compartment and it equals an expensive lesson.

Comments about Permanent Magnet I/O & Inboard Starters:

My starter failed, grrrrrrr... Removed it, went to West Marine, bought a new one. Hey, same one! I guess previous owner shops at West Marine also, 'good thing'. It was bliss for approximately six months.
4th of July boating weekend, life is good... Friday, never left the dock. GRRRRRRR!!! Following day, (4th of July), Pulled out the starter and ran to West Marine. - 'you sure this is the correct starter? - Yes sir, I sold you the previous one, I remember - "You sure?" Yes sir, I sold you the previous one, I remember, it was back in January. - Fine, give me another one.'
Life is Good! Back in business. Turns out it was the ignition/start switch, would get stuck on start and burn the starter after engine was already running.
Moral of the story - give them as much info as you can, so West Marine, (meaning them and their staff), can troubleshoot correctly, they know what you need.
          Life is Good!

Worked fine since summer of 2013. Solenoid refused to engage leaving me and my family stranded with a nice tow boat bill.
When you pay a premium price for "marine grade" you would expect better reliability. My 98 starter lasted until 2013.

                    Service and delivery comments:

Other vendor quoted 2 weeks for delivery..West Marine had it available for next day and at a lower price.
