Sit-In Rotomold Kayaks
Why buy a sit-inside roto-molded kayak?
A sit-inside kayak features a paddling position with a low center of gravity that makes it easier to paddle and gives you better control, it’s generally more stable and it provides shelter from cold water. Adding a spray skirt (sold separately) will keep you warmer and drier, but you’ll need a bilge pump in the event you are fully swamped. Most sit-insides have easily adjustable foot braces so you can adjust the fit to accommodate for different leg lengths if you aren’t the only one paddling your kayak.
A sit-inside will require considerably more effort to get back in from the water should you get dumped from your boat. You may have heard of an Eskimo roll. This technique allows you to recover yourself after capsizing by performing a complete rollover under water without becoming separated from the kayak. Learning the Eskimo roll takes some practice (best done in calm, familiar water), but mastering it will improve your safety and confidence.
Rigid kayaks are what most people think of when they hear the word kayak. These rigid models are made most commonly from roto-molded polyethylene. Strong, durable, almost-indestructible roto-molded polyethylene is the least expensive, but it’s relatively heavy. If you’re hard on your boat or want a kayak you can beach on sand or small pebbles, this type of kayak will take the most abuse.
